Also revealed at the launch was the company's commitment to introduce three to four new HD channels to its TV platform in the next few months,

Now that is news!

More HD channels is what everyone really ones. Who downloads films anyway with all these Blu ray & cut price HD DVDs available?

I'd dump Virgin instantly for Sky if I was allowed to install that wretched satellite dish. But apparently, I have to apply for 'planning permission' which costs circa £200 and is unlikely to be granted by those nerds who believe a sat dish defaces walls.

Re: Virgin Media 50Mb broadband – hands-on test, and what it means for you…

I think its poor that it is being offered as an extra service.

We are so far behind most other technological countries that it would have made more sense to upgrade the packages on offer to all customers i.e

20mb --> 50mb
10mb --> 25mb
2mb --> 10mb

The prices would be the same, but people would then be getting much better value for their money.

I used to live in a village in a "historic" area, council would not allow sat dishes and all the property's had covenants forbidding the fitting of external aerials or sat dishes.

I shoved a dish up the second I moved in, in a reasonably discrete place, within 2 years 70% had them.

I caught a council nerd going round making a note of all the houses with a dish, i said to him "does the council have the money to fight all 200 odd of us if we all chip in and fight a joint action against the council" he left and we never heard from them

Im pretty sure they cant stop you sticking them in the garden on a pole either

And what is the likelihood of this being available to rural communities where it is needed most - ZILCH!!! I have to wait for BT third-rate upgrade in 2010. Quite why Ofcom allows the relentless discrimination against country dwellers in broadband rollout is a mystery to me.

Correct, as long as it's a temporary solution eg lashed to a pole. If it's bolted, it would be classed as permanent and hence liable to planning etc.

Is government actually subsidising rollout? (It's a genuine question - I would support such an initiative)

I'm not sure what made you ask that question, but I believe the government has thrown a few bob in, in Wales.
I'm sure I read it somewhere, but I'm not sure what for.

I'd support it too, fwiw
