Post Blu-ray to overtake DVD in two years predicts Disney, Europe to trail US

<p><img style="margin: 6px; float: left;" src="http://www.homecinemachoice.com/files/hcc_content/software/sleeping.jpg" title="Will Sleeping Beauty awaken BD Live?" width="142" height="142" />Blu-ray will blast past DVD sales in as little as two years. That’s the belief of Disney vice president of Blu-ray and DVD creative production, David Jessen. </p>
<p>He says that the hi-def format is ‘right on the verge of becoming really big in the US… in two years Blu-ray will eclipse DVDs.’ <span class='read-more'><a href="http://www.homecinemachoice.com/blogs/team_HCC/bd+to+overtake+dvd">&nbsp;read&nbsp;more&nbsp;&raq uo;</a></span></p>

"The Blu-ray release of the 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty will be the first from the studio to allow viewers to talk and send messages to each other during the movie (just like being at a real cinema!)"

Thats why I DON'T go to a real cinema any more !! Great, bring the chavs into your own living room for that "real cinema experience" What next, simulated popcorn bag crunching ?

It'll be true once Blu-Ray players/recorders are below £99, movies are the same price as dvds and blank media are cheap like blank dvds.

Players will come down.
Movies will drop, but I don't see them drop to £4-£6 (a price range in which you can get thousands of dvds nowadays).
I don't see blank media drop to the price point of blank dvds; look at DL dvds, they said the same thing about those, but they never really dropped a lot and now they have almost completely disappeared.

You can already pick up a brand new Sammy blu-ray player for £150 Play.com (UK) : Samsung BD-P1400/XEU Blu-ray High Definition Player : Electronics - Free Delivery (to prove my point.

Within 2 years they will be peanuts. Asda jobbies and everything. A vast amount of blu-ray films can already be picked up for about a tenner. As more titles are released, the older ones will drop. I can see some titles costing £6-£7 by next summer. No TV that is not HD is sold any more, Millions of PS3's are being shifted this christmas. I think the fella has a good point.

EDIT: Just looked. With Play's 3 for 2 offer that seems ongoing. Quite a lot of Blu-Rays are already going for £7 each.

It'll be interesting watching to see what happens.

Of course, with the current credit crunch it's a perfect time to make the prediction. After all, it leaves you with a cast iron excuse if it doesn't happen.

DVD +R DL have not disappeared, I use them. You can get 8x 10 printables for around £3.80.

Still waiting for DVD +RW DL though.

I think he is actually right as to one thing.
Blue Ray will overtake DVDs very soon (even maybe in two years), but definitely not in USA :D
They still use 4:3 standard for TV, HELLO!!! :D

Re: Blu-ray to overtake DVD in two years predicts Disney, Europe to trail US

It'll likely happen in the USA first.

While still using 4:3 for standard TV is pretty dated, at least America got the switch to HDTV right. The UK went from 4:3 analogue to 16:9 analogue, then convinced everyone to switch to a low quality standard-def digital TV system. Whilst the US & Canada (and others) went from 4:3 analogue to 16:9 HDTV in one stroke.

I do wonder when we'll see an end to the "Blu-ray will fizzle out" mentality; it's not happening. It's as if people seem to expect a new format to wipe the other out in the space of a few months.

Never forget these guys are in it for the money. If BD films end up at DVD pricing levels in a couple of years, how is that attractive for them? They will always be a premium price compared to DVDs, and for most people who buy in supermarkets, that will be a no-no.

P.S. I have to laugh at the 2.0 content on Sleeping Beauty. That really is ridiculous.

I don't think it's as far fetched as some might think. I work at Currys (sorry!) and I've heard that we're getting some cheap-and-nasty bluray players from Logik in time for Christmas. Might even be £99. Probably between £100-£150

Why are you sorry? At least your obviously interested in what you do, unlike some who just try to folg you anything without really knowing diddly squat.

Thanks. By "sorry" I meant "sorry to have to tell you this, but..." rather than "sorry I work at Currys".

I'm only there part-time now while I do an electronics degree, but I was there full-time over the summer and it did annoy me how they only seemed to be interested in technical knowledge if it helped them sell stuff. (e.g. what I thought about HDMI leads didn't go down particularly well!) Still, that's just business I suppose.

I bet that went down like a lead balloon. I would'nt go telling them what you really think of their Logik blu-ray players either.

Incidentally, when you do get those in, is there any chance of putting a little review up on the forum? I would be interested to know exactly what can be bought now for a ton. And the million $ question, how does the quality stack up against the PS3.

I can remember. In 2000 about £15-£17.

Article written in 2001 (3 years after introduction of DVD) about dvd taking over vhs. Would'nt be suprised to see a similar one sometime next year.

Rocketing DVD sales indicate demise of the video - Home News, UK - The Independent

no,but at the end of the day the average joe will decide if blu ray wins and if there are like my brother and my missus then dvd will win because its cheaper and they cant tell the difference between the 2 in terms of pq quality.

Re: Blu-ray to overtake DVD in two years predicts Disney, Europe to trail US

The problem with Bluray is that the initial format wars and high cost of hardware set the seeds for what is happening now
Unlike DVD vs VHS, DVD was considered the format to oust VHS , Only its ability to record prolonged its life
BDs problem is that Joe Public does not consider the quality difference to be so much as to make it a "must have".
In fact even now the arent that well known and where ther are considered a bit of a luxury and marketing gimmick " Nothing wrong with DVD" and to be fair you can get decent DVD disc for £3-5 at Tescos , and grab a player for £19 on your way out

Only yesterday I was speaking to the mother of one of Paramounts UK marketing team. Very articulate Lady but had never heard of BluRay herself
..One of the formatof movie delivery her daughter was invovled in

I actually dont know any one with a BD player .. the few I know who play them use a PS3 and are qute happy to go to Blockbusters to rent raher than buy
My nephew ( does have over 150 titles but even then he uses the PS3) and never gets his from UK retail outlets

Do you think 100% of DVD owners did it for the quality, though? I thought it'd be a case of it getting cheap enough, being the thing to have, and admittedly, offering random access.

Re: Blu-ray to overtake DVD in two years predicts Disney, Europe to trail US

Do you think 100% of DVD owners did it for the quality, though?
Pretty close in my opinion. Yes there was also the simplicity and the compactness but I remember the quality difference when I first saw DVD as 'light and day'.

With HD I can certainly see a difference, but when I sit back 10' from my plasma it isn't that stunning.

Certainly not enough to convince me to invest. The hardware price I can justify - it's paying £15 to £20 for disks when I can get the same DVDs between £3 to £10.

Cheers,

Nigel

£100 might be a good price for a second player (bedroom, etc).
