Post PS3 finally gets DTS-HD Master Audio support for Blu-ray

DTS-HD MA has long been favoured by Fox for its movie releases. With a bit-rate up to 24.5 Mbps,* the system can deliver 7.1 [...]

Hi chrissyman.
LPCM DTS-MA decoded in the player instead of at the amp.
605 would be fine any amp that can accept LPCM over HDMI will do the job.
Mine does and it's only HDMI 1.1.
All the best.

Just a heads up in addition to kingfats reply...the PS3 cannot bitstream HD audio over HDMI.

Re: PS3 finally gets DTS-HD Master Audio support for Blu-ray

Thanks for that so the onkyo 605/705 or the sony 3200es/denon 1908 can do LPCM over hdmi i was a bit confused as the onkyo has tru hd and dts hd decoding but says nothing about LPCM on the specs.

The onkyo looks to be the best bet as it can handle just about anything

cheers

Hi chrissyman.
The 605 and above can handle bitstream HD audio and accept decoded HD audio.

They usually issue the download at the same time, so you can either go to a mates and stick it on CD or USB key, or if you get really desperate i'm sure a kind soul on the forum will send you a copy.

And DTS-MA wooohooo go the PS3. Now all we need is mkv and full xvid and divx playback and i can stop p-ing about with media PCs!

Sony have done a great JOB with the PS3 and I wish them all the best for HUGE PROFITS they deserve them.

With this device we have the best value for money Audio Visual device ever produced to date. I cannot see it being topped anytime soon.

If they could make one with a "IMPROVE PLOT" or "BETTER ACTING" button on it, I might actually consider paying, oooooh, let me think...... £50 for one.

Re: PS3 finally gets DTS-HD Master Audio support for Blu-ray

Can anyone tell me why 640 Kbs via Bitstream on the 605 sounds a lot better than Linear PCM on Uncompressed soundtracks? And why doesn't the receiver identify Tru HD,and converts(when on Linear PCM)Dolby to PCM?
Everything is set to Direct on the receiver and my HDMI cables are 1.3,I just wanted the receiver to identify the signals and not do any tinkering of its own.If the soundtrack is True HD or simple Dolby I want to know it's decoding it faithfully.
Please guys, tell me what did you do to run things perfectly-Lossy sound shouldn't sound a lot better than an uncompressed one

Hi mate.
Somethings a miss as HD audio should clearly sound better than regular DD/DTS.
With the PS3 will appear as MULTI CH on the amp.
What movies have you tried, and have you asked in the Onkyo forum for advice?

The PS3 doesn't output bitstream HD audio, therefore it's the PS3 that does the decoding and then outputs the audio as PCM to the AV Receiver.

Re: PS3 finally gets DTS-HD Master Audio support for Blu-ray

Does the PS3 downsample HD audio to 1.5mb/sec DTS to the standard coaxial/optical output? I can't replace my av pre-amp, but want to take advantage of better sound. I believe a early Toshiba HD-DVD downsampled, so although not true HD audio, better than normal DVD-Video audio.

Hi badbob.
If using optical, the PCM track will be 2ch TrueHD will be DD 640kbs and DTS-MA will be the core track DTS @ 1.5Mbs.

Re: PS3 finally gets DTS-HD Master Audio support for Blu-ray

I've just updated to 2.30 and is playing "Entrapment" with audio set to DTS HD MA. PS3 audio output (HDMI) set to bitstream. Connection to Denon 3808 (Surround Mode set to Standard) via HDMI. "DTS Surround" appeared on amp display. OSD showed "DTS Multichannel 48kHz 1.5 Mbps". So am I actually getting HD MA?

Hi OrangeL and welcome to the forum.
PS3 should be set to LPCM will show up as MULTI-CH on your Denon which is correct.
Select the track you want of the disc and your good to go!
Press select on the PS3 controller to view full audio spec.
All the best.

Tks, Kingfats, that's very helpful. Tested HD-MA track of Independence Day on both PS3 and Panny BD30. The latter has more details and sounds richer, I'll have to say though.

Sorry for sounding dumb on this one but I know next to nothing about these audio standards

I have a Logitech Z-5500 connected to my PS3 via optical cable. Will I get the new higher audio playback quality?

Thanks

Optical cable doesn't have the bandwidth to fit all of the information down it. You need a HDMI cable to a HD amp.

Re: PS3 finally gets DTS-HD Master Audio support for Blu-ray

What about multi-region (DVD and Blu-ray) Also need IR remote control, without too much expense (and has to have standby/power on from the remote)

Can't believe Sony didn't include a IR sensor...not bothered if no remote is supplied, but if it's IR capable easy enough to aquire IR codes (ie losing your TV remote, if you have a remote where other people have the codes learnt, which you can then import to yours)
