I find this strange because I would of thought with the broadcast of hd television set to increase more people would be needing a much larger storage medium than dvd to archive their programmes.

The hd on a sky hd box is relatively small so you would think that most people with this, and the numbers are growing, would like a large backup medium, it is also where the extra potential storage space of blu ray over hd dvd could give it an extra selling point.

True but thanks to hdcp you wouldn't actaully be able to record any of sky hd's protected by hdmi output even if you had the necessary recorder, though you could by component if they bother to add the necessary inputs. We currently have no legit digital source for recordable hd material.

..except HD camcorder footage of course. That's why I want a BD recorder.. Just have to get a BD PC burner I guess, when the prices fall a bit..

Not anymore, with 51Gb HD-DVD triple layer disks about to become available.

Recording HD material might be made easier when Sky finally enable the port at the rear of the Sky HD box. Thus adding more capacity. Also an easier option for some, particularly those opposed to physically installing a larger Disk drive.

True although I thought blu ray had the potential to go up to 100gb itself eventually

I believe they claim it may be possible to produce 8 layer discs and unless my maths is wrong that makes 200gb disc for blue ray. years away from that though. no chance i'd say of component inputs being put on any recorders as this avoids hdcp and no manufacturers going to do that considering how much they've spent implementing it. Sucks i know.

That was fast. It took 'em years to develop recordable DVDs, then another couple more for the dual layer variety, but now but a few weeks after TDK announced their hard workin' intentions to develop 8-layer 200GB recordable Blu-ray discs, they've got it bagged. Balls to the fact that we still don't have the players; the interesting thing about these discs, however, is that the data isn't stored on thin layers of dye, no no. Apparently when each layer of bismuth peroxide and germanium oxide is heated to 690K by laser, microscopic air bubbles form and create the bits we've come to know and obsess over. Oh sure, these discs are probably going to be horrendously expensive in the beginning, but isn't it nice to know we're already good to go on capacities large enough to archive years of home movies
