Post Blu-ray heads for upset defeat at the hands of HD DVD

The ongoing battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD will stifle sales of HD packaged media for at least another 18 months. So concludes a new report from Forrester Research. The publication says that the two camps are “fighting what seems to be a war of attrition for consumers’ hearts and minds,” but concludes that Blu-ray [...]

Cant see if happening - especially since the Blu-ray is already in millions of people's homes in the shape of a PS3. They have a got a massive head start already and I seriously doubt HD-DVD will catch up no matter who they have exclusivity deals with.

True.

The full BD-J will be out soon too, plus i'm sure I read that 3/4 of big cinema movies this year are going to be BD titles.

As for defecting to HD-DVD, in Paramounts case this was due to the $150 million and not really spec and support, as there own engineers were confused over the deal.

Re: Blu-ray heads for upset defeat at the hands of HD DVD

There is still a way to go in this battle but personally find this report a bit funny in them thinking hd dvd has won. We have seen blu ray outsell hd dvd in terms of software sales all year but do agree that stand alone blu ray players need to drop in price but have been doing so all year. Shrek is a big movie for hd but before that we have spiderman on blu ray which should really showcase 1080p image quality. All things considered with both formats providing same picture quality blu ray should be the winner based on its much larger capacity each layer on the disk can provide. Also would I be the only to think that the brown cases of hd dvd is the most rotten dull colour to promote a next gen media disk where the blu ray has a much more appealling clean modern look. Maybe being a little picky on that point but I do so hate the brown colour........

Just about everyone involved in production hates BD. Its expensive to manufacture ( an hd-dvd production line can also press dvd) , has a hateful and unpopular programming protocol for disc authoring , doesn't support network connection as standard on every player ( see disney come running after the shrek 3 disc hits), is reliant on the currently worst selling games console for its market penetration rather than consumer desirability on its own terms.

Re: Blu-ray heads for upset defeat at the hands of HD DVD

I think the longer the 'format war' drags on the more certain it is HD DVD will win. The exclusivity of movies to each format will force the CE producers down the 'dual format' route - Samsung and LG are already walking that path with Denon expressing their intention to follow. And in a dual format world HD DVD, with it's cheaper disc production and authoring, will win.

And it's the ideal situation for us as well - the dual format nature of players will mean nobody, whichever format they have backed, need fear their discs becoming 'useless'.

No, disney and fox haven't received any money, they chose blu ray for the storage space and added security.
