This is a very reasoned argument. Far too many manufacturers are making marketing points by putting scalers into A/V Amps and Receivers. This has little to do with performance and everything to do with sales. Many purchasers of highly reviewed products have now found this out to their cost, having spent more on an amp with a scaler which does not do what they were led to believe it would.

It is my opinion that the term 'scaling/upscaling' has been the most misunderstood application to blight the AV world for at least a year now.
Without in any way being condescending i think there is also an almost complete unawareness of decent deinterlacing/film/video replay etc etc. Scaling (and just how bad some of these things really are) seems to have become the single focus lately.

Whatever

Call me a cynic, but arcam also recently along with Meridian, rubbished hd dvd, saying that in their opinion the consumer should buy a good quality dvd player until the market stabilised.

I recently bought a toshiba hd-dvd in the States- cost me £400. IT IS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS THE NEW ARCAM AT UPSCALING STANDARD DVD - THE DIFFERENCE? ABOUT £800 STILL IN MY POCKET.

The reason they don't put a scaler in their receiver is probably due to production scale rather than scaler. They simply cannot compete with the Japanese companies

Their receiver is £1500 and I still end up needing to feed loads of cables into my display - I don't think so.I have a denon 3806 cost £1000 and it upscales everything to 1080i and puts it out via hdmi. This convenience aspect alone makes the purchase worthwhile and the quality is fine.
