HP have released an updated version of WebOS - 3.0.4

It has made my Touch much more responsive and the Bing Maps app now works better (pinch to zoom, navigate around the map , etc - still can't do that to Google Maps from the browser, though).

Apparently can now also connect other (non-WebOS) phones via Bluetooth to use the phone app - but haven't tied it as yet!

i had previously downloaded preware (but not overclocked) - which this seems to have overwritten, e.g. the screen 'ripples'/splashes where you touch it again. I'll wait for the homebrew community to confirm all OK before I do that again!

Installed Android on my touchpad yesterday and am very pleased with how much quicker everything works and also the vast amount of apps and games in the android market.

Have being downloading stuff, love playing fruit ninja and 3d darts on my touchpad.

Also youtube and bbc iplayer works flawlessly and the browser seems miles better that the Webos one. Used to hate pages constantly reloading for no reason on the Webos browser.

Anyone know how much space Webos takes up on the touchpad and is there a way of getting rid of webos all together?

No way of getting rid of Web OS yet but I would advise you to keep it for now just in case.

Ice cream sandwich port would be wonderful, hopefully we'll get it sometime xmas.

Have to say am impressed with it so far but just one bloody gripe, is anyone else finding the built in browser *****, doesn't always recognise the finger presses and some times the connection dies? - am still on WEBOS

OS takes loads of memory around 2gb, so you'll have 13.6gb available. Install Android another 2gb is taken. Really 16gb is enough for most people unless you are going to store loads of multimedia (audio/video) content.

I was just thinking that if i had the 32gb then i wouldnt have to worry about having to make space by deleting stuff. I can see myself putting much audio content on there as ill use spotify and the like when near a wifi connection or id use my phone for audio, again with video content i cant see myself putting anything on there as i dont really have any. unless i put some south park on(if its in mpeg4 format).

Should have researched this, does the TP have a usb to transfer files etc from pc. Is the TP worth it when compared to the samsung galaxy or the asus transformer. I can get the 32gb fr £200 or the 16 for £170.

thanks

Yes it does have USB (mini), so you can plug it on your PC and drag and drop.

If you paid £89 for it then it is 100% worth it, Transformers is around £300 for similar spec tablet. Although they are better but not worth it when you purchased the TP for 1/3 of the price. Also seeing as how Google are going to release Ice-cream sandwich source code in a few weeks time we'll have native tablet OS support for TP.

I havent even booted into WebOS since installing Android. With the 1st cyanogenmod release I got what they are calling the Screen of Death quite often and I needed to rebood the TP quite often but now I have installed Alph2.1 it has been rock solid for over a week now (ok it has required 1 reboot in that time).
It was just announced that HP are going to hang onto their pc and tablet devision and are currently testing the touchpad with windows 8. With ICS coming soon (hopefully) I think there is a lot of life left in the TP.

I used to have screen of death during the alpha release but haven't gotten any on the new update.

Most popular apps and games are 5-60mb, there are some HD games that are over 300mb but not all games work at the moment. However most of the popular apps/games are really small.

Talking

I purchased one new the other day from eBay, 32 GB version for £207.98; I also got the Poetic(TM) leather case that doubles as a stand from Amazon for £19.99 and a Skinomi Screen and full body skin from eBay for £12.99.

I'm delighted with the HP Touchpad, hardware is excellent and the webOS is actually a pleasant surprise considering all the negative comments I have read about it. I did update the OS as soon as I took it out the box though.

The only thing that is really disappointing for me is the lack of upnp media sharing and media player that can actually handle AVI, MKV, etc. I have already purchased Kalemsoft from their website and it does work but it really bothers me that I have to install the Kalemsoft media server software to play media from my server.

I already have XBMC running and it has its own built-in server I don't understand why this device doesn't have a media player that can play straight from my current server. Surely a software developer would be rewarded handsomely for creating this software or am I missing something?

Overall a great device for the money and with ICS a possibility as well I think it has a long life ahead.

Not a bad price but the Poetic(TM) HP Touchpad Stand Leather Case is probably the best one on offer at a decent price £19.99. Here is a youtube review that will give you a better look.

I've got a kid so it needs some protection as the little guy can drop things.

Coming to the conclusion that the HP Touchpad looks about best specification for sub £200 tablets.

Looks like the 16gb are starting to become scarce - were available for £169.99 plus £7.99 delivery on eBay. Now seems only 32gb at £199.99 plus delivery available.

I suppose the fact that these were available for under £120 for those lucky / quick enough puts some off as it doesn't feel like you are getting the best deal but even at the current prices it seems to compare well - good screen & fast processor etc.

Was considering 16gb but now maybe 32gb given availability. Does it have a slot for an micro(SD) card and / or can use use a USB stick for expandability ?

Cheers

It doesn't have a SD card slot or USB port though I think you can buy some sort of micro SD cable that acts as a host and allows you to transfer files from a SD card:

Did you find any solutions to this?

Would be great to stream movies/music straight from my HTPC running XBMC

I have just received a TP as a generous gift. I have bought the kalemsoft media player to support more file types, but i still can't find / play AVIHD files (.MTS) from my digital camera - is that right ?

What is the recommended video converter software to enable this ?

Is it legal in the UK to convert DVDs that i own to a format that works on a tablet ? If so, would the recommended software be the same as that for .MTS files ?

I was thinking of installing android. Are there a lot more apps available and were they written for a tablet ? I installed linked in through the HP app place, but as it was not written for the TP and it's pants..

Thanks

I recommend Handbrake and choose a simple profile like the iPhone one.

No it is still not legal in the UK to make a copy or convert a DVD (or CD) - hopefully this will change soon to be like the US where it is legal to make a "fair use" copy.

Yes I recommend installing Android as there are loads of compatible games and programs. Since installing Android on mine I rarely return to webOS.

I've gone the other way, bizarrely! I really like the app management that WebOS gives you compared to Android, especially closing by flicking them off the screen. Maybe ICS will be better but I'm just not Feelin' the Android Love.

Thanks. I was under the impression that you bought the content and then could do what you wanted with it. Clearly this common sense is not incoporated into the law. I'm sure that there wouldn't be a knock on the door by Mr Plod, but appreciate that we can't discuss illegal activity on av forums.

I wonder if it was technically illegal to transfer vinyl onto cassette in the old days, so that you could listen to it on your walkman ?
