Is my Quad L-ite Sub Faulty?

Hey all. Received my Quad L-ite 5.1 speaker package yesterday, connected it all up to my new Onkyo amp and was immediately impressed by the quality of the sound emitted from the satelites.

However, when I turned up the bass a little I noticed a rattling sound coming from the sub. Turning the volume up more increased the rattle.

The only way I can get the sub not to rattle is to turn the bass down so low that it's pretty much non-existent.

I've checked to see that it isn't just something near the sub that's rattling and can confirm that it is in fact the sub by telling you of the two solutions to the problem:

1 - touching the sub's cone temporarily stops the rattling, then after a minute or so it comes back.
2 - turning the sub upside down gets rid of the rattling permanantly.

I always planned to have the sub hidden so I am not bothered about it being upside down; the bass coming out of it is astounding! However, I'm worried that this may cause problems in the long term.

Also, with my Harman Kardon system, when I turned the receiver off it sent a signal to the sub to turn it off. Is this possible with an Onkyo 605 amp and this sub? Should I turn it off manually every night or is it OK to keep it on?

Thanks

Re: Is my Quad L-ite Sub Faulty?

It shouldn't rattle - It's faulty.
Sounds to me like either a fault in the driver, or a wire or something that's come loose and is coming in to contact with the back of the driver.
Get in touch with your supplier to arrange for a replacement.

There's no way to turn the sub off other than manually.
You can put it in to standby with the remote or off completely with the switch at the back.

Re: Is my Quad L-ite Sub Faulty?

That’s not right, I have the quad sub and I don’t hear any rattling. The only problem I have encountered was when setting up the audyssey could not detect the sub and I had to set it at 12+ before it was detected.

I would be straight on the phone to your dealer. The sub down fires so it is not practical or designed to be run inverted, therefore your not going to get the best sound out of a decent set up like that.

One of my sats arrived damaged and I was sent a new one which arrived the next morning. So hopefully you can get yours replaced.

I use my harmony 555 remote to put all my kit (inc Quad sub) into standby with one button press

Hey, thanks for all the replies.

I have tried changing the feet but that has not fixed it

I have contacted the company that sold me the speakers. Do you think it would be unreasonable of me to ask them to swap the sub rather than collect mine, inspect it, repair it, then return it? Also, due to clumsiness (not my own) the top of the sub has a scratch on it (about 5 inches) will this be an issue when returning it to the seller?

cheers.

Ordinarily I would say you'd be able to demand a replacement rather than a repair but as you've damaged (scratched) it I would imagine you may be out of luck.
