Sub connection (sort of)

Ok so i am just about to purchase a sub to complete my home cinema set up and have pretty much decided on the SVS Pb-ultra. I am using a Denon 4306 that is pretty much just being used as a 3 channel amp/processor that is linked to my existing Naim two channel system. So because the Denon is out of the loop completely when i listen to music i need two connections to the sub( why not have some fun with music to eh!) .But the Naim's variable stereo pre out can't be switched of though, so what i am looking for is some sort of high quality rca switching or possibly just a switch to stop the naims signal when the denon is on(Switcher probably best just in case i forget). Anybody with any suggestions on where to get such a thing or if anyone has any better ideas i am open to suggestions. I'm also aware that i will have to match the output of each system to the sub does not need two sets of settings i need a lot of help me thinks Cheers.

Jase.

I run my Naim pre-power amps for both music and film. The NAP180 power amp drives the main speaker in both stereo and surround modes. (via an active crossover at 80Hz) It seems a shame not to use Naim amplification for the Main (Front L&R) speakers if you have it available.

I obtained a special cable from Flashback cables to obtain a line level stereo output from my NAC72 preamp output socket. (Needs a Hicap for the Preamp power supply)

This allows me to select sources using the preamp for both film and music. A Yamaha E800 processor/amp provides 5.1 surround sound and three channels of amplification for the Center speaker and Rears.

You may be able to do the same with your Denon.

It sounds as if you are running later Naim kit if it offers pre-outs.

Re: Sub connection (sort of)

I would be connecting it in a similar to yourself nimby, taking the pre-out from the hicap, The nac 202 pre-amp has an av button that defeats its volume control and lets me use the nap 250.2 as a power amp for the front two channels,So this will work fine but i would have liked have been able to have a direct connection to the denon as well as i feel it would be better for the home cinema side of things,Taking the .1 channel independently surely must have benefits if not just for set up of the sub alone,Thats why i was looking for an Rca switch but i don't think the ones they sell at the likes of maplin etc are really up to the task. Thanks anyway .

Re: Sub connection (sort of)

I achieve exactly the same effect by whacking the volume on the preamp up to (around) 12 o' clock when using the Yamaha E800 for 5.0 on DVDs. Bass is redirected to Mains by the E800 on films.

I use an inexpensive active crossover (Behringer CX2310) on the Main/Stereo speaker channels to allow my speakers to cross over at 80Hz to the IB subwoofer on both music and film.

The speakers really sing using a crossover. With imagery, clarity and detail I don't get running full range. No doubt the NAP180 enjoys not having to bung out the heavy bass giving me lots of extra headroom. The subwoofer is all but unburstable down to 10 or 12Hz which provides a tremendous sense of power with devastating infrasonic effects.

More details of my IB subwoofer exploits below:
