Help with REW 4.10

Hi,

I downloaded REW connected my laptop's headphone socket up to my processors VRC input (via a 3.5mm jack to two RCA lead) in order to run sound through my sub and also got hold of a 3.5mm to rca lead which connected from my microphone socket on the laptop to my SPL meter.

Everything was fine and dandy I was playing sounds through the sub (by going to settings and calibrating everything in REW) and my SPL meter needle was moving to suggest it would be making readings.

However when I try and run the measure bit of REW I get an error stating my impulse response is -31.9 when it should be better than -10.

Any ideas as this is new to me??

All of the soundcard setting are on full (microphone, speaker out etc).

Welcome to the world of REW.
Be prepared for many hours of tinkering and probably the purchase of a BFD!

A microphone input is no use.
You need a line level input.

So is there a lead I can get for my laptop that does this (it doesn't have an rca input on it)?

It won't be an RCA input - it will still be 3.5mm but it's line level not microphone.
In answer to your question:-
Nope, I'm afraid not.
If your laptop's sound card doesn't have a line level input the only solution is to get a USB soundcard that does.

Ahh it does have another 3.5mm jack connection which looks like this (lol) with a horizontal line leading from the dot (which isn't an "o" in the centre). Does this make sense?

Re: Help with REW 4.10

That could well be it. On mine it's a mirror image of the symbol on the speaker socket.
Do yours have any colour coding? mic is usually pink, speakers green and line in blue.
Failing that, have a root around the sound in Control Panel on your laptop. If it has a line in you should be able to find it in there somewhere.

Re: Help with REW 4.10

This is what i also need having a laptop......i'll be going with either the creative soundblaster live24 or the S/B mp3+ sound-cards which have a line input also well as output etc......plus the edirol um-1x usb midi for up/down loading the filter settings to the bfd.

Does anyone know if any of the other edirol mini's are ok , like the um-1ex or the UA-1ex ....and do both the input/output's have to be connected i'll have to take another look i guess..

Yes it it the blue one I think its line-in. I have just recalibrated it ad got beter results so REW advised me increase the volume of the processor which I did to get the following results (but there is an awful hum from my laptop going through the processor which stops as soon as I take out the headphone jack to the processor)...

I personally wouldn't bother with the midi cable.
You shouldn't really be using that many filters anyway - after reading some good stuff over at home theatre shack I got mine down to 2.
It's a 2 minute job to enter them manually.

Why don't people read the manual before asking questions that are very easy to answer yourself. The poor people on this forum have lives too you know

... to the sarcasm Angeleyes, you could have just said all you need is in the manual in the help file (which I have just found). You might have gathered that I am a novice to this from my questions but its easy to make comments like those above when you know what you're doing.

And a good reason why this and other forums exist......if we were all knowing then it wouldn't would it not.
