Rel Q100E problem - loud pops

After searching the internet and e-mailing REL support (no answer), I thought I'd try my luck in this wonderful forum

The Problem:

Eight years ago I bought a Rel Q100E. But now it has developed a problem at the lowest frequencies.

Using a calibration DVD playing just the LFE channel from 20Hz to 120Hz at normal movie volume settings on both the Rel and amplifier, there are loud "pops" between 20Hz to 40Hz in between hearing/feeling the sound coming from the Rel. In the manual I read about the set-safe system and it seems like it is kicking in. I'm sure I'm not overloading the unit, since this happens at normal volume levels I've been using for 8 years and I've never noticed the set-safe system working at much louder levels.

Does this problem sound familiar? Is there something I can do about it?

Thanks for any help!

Re: Rel Q100E problem - loud pops

Did this problem happen prior to the arrival of DVE, or just while running the test tones on it? Does it happen with any other DVDs or music?

The reason I ask is that test tones are notoriously demanding and I can believe the set-safe is kicking in as the Q100e isn't massively powerful.

Re: Rel Q100E problem - loud pops

I first noticed the problem when watching movies with lots of LFE. I think it has gotten worse, because it happens with music and DVD's now at lower levels than before. I used the calibration DVD to isolate the problem.

It could be that the sub is just on it's way out.

A gradually worsening problem like this points to a degrading electronic component. Capacitors can gradually die through heat exposure for instance. Unless you know someone competent at electronic repair, I'm not sure if it would be worth getting a professional repair done as it may not be economical (Ebay=£100 approx), but I'm no expert in this regard.

Thanks for the reply. It's a shame if it is dying.
