Turntable on top of a sub, will it be ok?

I've got a Project Genie turntable and it fits perfectly on top of my sub. Will it be ok having it on there? The sub is not magnetically sheilded and I didn't know if it would damage the turntable or vice versa.

It'd be ideal if it won't cause any damage though. Don't want to break anything.

Cheers!

Re: Turntable on top of a sub, will it be ok?

I wouldn't either.

Those of us old enough will remember being told that the Linn Sondek was immune to vibration thanks to its spring system. It was even placed on top of an Isobarik with no reported problems. Odd how shortly after an endless series of expensive upgrades proved necessary to remain isolated from its support surface. Even the bottom board needed to be replaced depending on whether it was supported on a wall, a table or a rack.

Turntables rely on physical movement of a tiny jewel in a wavy groove with microscopic deviations in the walls of the groove. As such it is highly susceptible to external vibration. Any heavy object placed under a turntable is a bad idea since it continues to vibrate long after the excitement is over. So even when it isn't working a subwoofer is a bad idea as a support platform for your turntable.

Re: Turntable on top of a sub, will it be ok?

The sub is only used for films, it's turned off completely for music, would that make a difference?

Yes. You'd lose your quality bass when listening to music.

Re: Turntable on top of a sub, will it be ok?

To add my vote, I can't think of a worse place whether the sub is working or not unless you use some serious vibration control issues.

Something like Milty Foculpods under the turntable feet would work okay as they damp about 95% of everything above 8Hz, but it's still not ideal.

Hahah nice one! I don't like listening to music with it on, makes it sound weird to me, probably just my preference. So scrap that as a place to stand it then. Need to find somewhere to put it then.

Re: Turntable on top of a sub, will it be ok?

try a dedicated wall support or a good decoupled stand

Wall stand is no go. Might try to find some sort of table as it's just stood on the floor now.

Do you have an Ikea near you?

They do a chunky little bedside table very cheap which is considered the dog's wotsits in turntable circles.

Called a "Lack". There's also a Corras.

Here's the Lack in Black:

£29 IIRC and I have two. My MJ Ref 200 (XLS200 sized) used to fit quite nicely under it.

Re: Turntable on top of a sub, will it be ok?

I think you'll find that a well placed throw and table lamp will disguise sub under the table completely.

If not, a large enough ceramic eagle will suffice.

Russell

PS. Thanks for your help!
