Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
The speakers I have now aren't any good really, they are only temporary. Upgrading in stages
Looking at a budget of Max £200 if I can help it.

Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
I read that anything below 300w active is a waste of money. Is this true?

Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
doesnt work that simply.. a badly designed 300w powered sub can be blown away by a well designed 150w sub.
what speakers are you looking to match the sub with and what size of room...

Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
I thought it was something along those lines. Goes to show, google isn't gospel
I'm running some crappy speakers from my pc Neutac S71702 surround at the moment. I've just bought the amp to replace it and plan on upgrading bit by bit. Next step is the sub as I can't use the old one. Then comes the speakers.
The room is 11' x 17' (3.35m x 5.2m) but there is also a 14' x 7.3' (4.27m x 2.24m) kitchen off of it. Its an L shape which makes things a little more difficult. At least the amp is intelligent and can do some corrections.

Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
Thinking of incresing my budget £300 now. Was looking at the Warfdale SW150 & SW250? Whats the main difference of of down-facing sub? Just feeling through the floor? Does it produce a deeper bass?

Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
Would have thought the answer would be an XLS200-DF Mk2 from BK - coincidentally showing as the footer ad below your post: XLS200 page
AFAIK, the performance of down- and forward-facing is almost identical; the FF can give placement advantages whilst the DF can look more discrete and be more protected from animal/child "interest".

Reason: added bit about DF/FF

Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
Those BK's look suprisingly nice. Thinking I might have narrowed down my search to the BK XLS200 (Not sure on facing, probaly FF) or the XLS300. Are these not carried by shops though? Would like to see before I buy...

Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
They're not carried in shops in this country.
BK's are an OEM manufacturer for several other so called 'manufacturers', including the likes of Ruark (where subs are concerned) and MJ Acoustics and historically, all of the early RELs. As such, it's not really in their best interests to compete in the same market place (ie, the high street) along against all of their major customers.
If you wish to see before you buy, have a look at any MJ Acoustics product; They're unsurprisingly very, very similar.
I also took some half decent piccies in the BK XLS-300/ pr thread here.
One thing I would say is that if you can afford the XLS-300, don't bother with the 200.

Re: Sub reccomendations for Yamaha rx-v1700
Thanks Russ, excellent reveiw as well. Looks like I will be going for the XLS300. Was slightly tempted by the KEF PSW3500 (£299 on ebay) although it is quite wide. Would you still reccomend the BK?
Thanks again
