Booming subwoofer when playing music DVDs
I have an MS308 subwoofer with MS302 front and rears. When I play a movie, the sound is pretty good for a low budget setup.
With music DVDs, such as Pink Floyd’s “Pulse” & Fleetwood Mac’s “The Dance”, the MS308 is very boomy. Is it because music DVDs are mixed differently from movie DVDs or is the MS308 not up to it?
When I use my 15 year old Tannoy DC 2000 floor stand speakers the sound is great from music DVDs although I could do with the bass going a bit lower.

Or where it is positioned in the room - i.e Tight up in a corner.
If you can, alter it's position, and see if that helps.

Re: Booming subwoofer when playing music DVDs
may sound a daft ? but have you calibrated it correctly at least with an spl.. some people run subs hot for various reason on movies (perhaps overcompensating for weakness in the sub because they are not hearing those sub bass moments simply because the sub cant reach them or room nodes are cancelling them out), as soon as you put a music dvd in with its masses of lovely natural bass its going to unbalance everything.

Re: Booming subwoofer when playing music DVDs
Thank you for your replies.
I’ll try moving the sub around but it sounds like an SPL meter is a good investment.
Is the analogue Radio Shack SPL any good?
Going back to my initial post, I never notice any booming with foreground music on movie DVDs.

If the RS meter is this one, then yes that's the defacto industry standard and recommended.

The amp is a Yamaha DSP AX759SE. I used the supplied mic and auto setup.
The crossover is set at 100Hz, small speakers and the sub is connected from subwoofer pre out. The crossover on the back of the MS308 is set to 150Hz
Auto setup gave the correct distances for the front, centre and surround speakers. For the sub, it calculated it was 60cms from the mic. The distance is actually 4.2 metres. I manually input the distance. The sub is located along the TV wall between the centre and left speaker and angled at about 45 degrees.
