mordant short sub buzzing..please help!

I have owned my Mordant Short MSW-20 sub for around 5 years now and cant take the buzzing noise it makes any longer!

First of all i thought , they all do that... but other opinions say not, i get a fairly loud buzz as soon as its switched on at mains, there does not have to be power on at amp or TV for this to happen.

I have searched various threads on here and have tried a few things to no avail...is my sub fu**ed or is there something i can do?

1/ it goes into standard double plug socket (no surge protecter) have took everything else out and is different one to amp and tv anyway.

2/ took out earth wire on plug

3/ tried different mains lead

4/ tried different plug sockets round room

5/ even took it to local electrical shop, who had a look but all sealed inside so he said... need a specialist repairer mate etc etc ..he didnt want to get too involved i feel.

All this to no avail!!

the sub still works fine , but is very annoying when your film is only playing dialogue and all you can hear is buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

be grateful of any help!

Dave

Re: mordant short sub buzzing..please help!

it sounds like your picking up ground hum, dont do 2... the ground you need to isolate at one end is the rca ground i think, check for somone else to expand on this

recent hifi experiance + humming from my sub

Pull out the phono plug (sub cable at sub end), does it still make a buzz.

Re: mordant short sub buzzing..please help!

the answer i was dreading!

is it actually worth repairing though? I guess it would need a specialist repair as my local electrical shop wont touch it

It cost me about £200 i think a few years ago now...how much would a similar model one cost, or should i save some money and upgrade to a complete 5.1 speaker package as my other speakers are Eltax symphony 4's very basic pioneer rear speakers

but then thats awhole different thread..

Re: mordant short sub buzzing..please help!

ok this was bought in 2000 on a budget so dont laugh..

AMP - Sherwood 6095 rds
FR speakers - Eltax symphony 4's
Rear speakers - Pioneer not sure what model but only cheapy 15 watters from richer sounds

DVD recorder- Panny ES10

i only have a smallish lounge (about 12 ft square)

have just rang Richer Sounds to ask about repairing sub, it would cost £35 just to look at it plus parts..

am confused what to do at mo, as dont really have budget to overhaul my complete system

Re: mordant short sub buzzing..please help!

Are you sure the earth is functioning correctly in your house? Or maybe just the socket?
