Given up with trying to EQ for room (subwoofer)

and considering selling my BFD too

wife and son were away for 2 nights - so perfect opportunity to get the chores done + spend a few hours getting the Monolith set-up nicely.

as per another thread I have an annoying HUGE (like -20dB) dip at between 49-62 Hz.

Tried subwoofer with no-EQ just about everywhere within the room - and the trough moved up and down by a dB or so - but nothing to really make a difference.

Then kept the sub in one place and moved the meter around and did RoomEQ each time - there are two squares, each about 1 foot by 1 foot where the dip doesn't appear - woot ! - one in fact gives almost a perfect flat response - no way possible for seating to go there.

the other bizarely is about 1 foot in front of where the settee is at the moment, 1 foot in front (settee can't go there as you wouldn't be able to walk through the door !)- and bingo - no dip - 1 foot back - almost -20dB ! What a difference.

Tried every possible combination of phase of sub, crossover to mains to no avail.

For some reason though - my mains - with bung in the bass port - give a flatter response down to 35Hz than my sub - ok you can see a small dip -but nowhere near -20dB !

basically my room is PANTS !

this is the sub-only plot LOL !

Sub-only plot - most runs were 80dB + don't know why this particular one was so low - but its the one I saved - and they all gave the same response no matter the volume.

or my Monolith just doesn't work that great in my particular room.

Mark.

Ok, but what does it actually sound like?

Re: Given up with trying to EQ for room (subwoofer)

just to echo what Russell has said.... my unfiltered response is much much more all over the place then that (graphs on another PC so can't post for comparison). IIRC a ~20dB peak over a range of about 10Hz is immediately followed by a response that ranges from a ~ -15dB dip at one end of the (small 2 seat) sofa to a ~+15 dB peak at the other end of the sofa.

I can EQ out the peak quite easily and the null is somewhat conducive to a mild boost but it's still pretty much all over the shop and the crossover area is quite a mess as well and nothing seems to deal with that

Nevertheless I think it sounds great and the BFD (in my room) makes a big difference. I wouldn't do without it and I always hope that when we finally move house things will be even better

Mind you if it is that flat without a BFD then one does wonder whether you actually *need* it. Even if you don't though I'd keep hold of it for future subs or houses given that they're only going to be trickier to get hold of in future (assuming no other bargain replacement appears).
Cheers
Matt

Re: Given up with trying to EQ for room (subwoofer)

By its very nature a trough is relatively inaudible. You can't really hear what isn't there.

What happens in REW when both main speakers and sub are playing together?

My fuzzy logic suggests that if you place your sub very close to one of your speakers the sub ought to perform similarly to the speaker. Why would the sub produce a trough but not the speaker?

Your sub certainly has some serious output to a very low frequency indeed.

It seems almost churlish at this point to mention that your REW graph's vertical scale should ideally be set to 45-105dB to aid comparison and interpretation.

Try listening to some music at your normal seating position. Then try perching on a chair one foot in foot of your sofa. Can you actually hear any difference?

My own system has a deep trough at the crossover point between speakers and sub. I cannot move my chair, my speakers or my sub. It still sounds superb to my cloth ears. So much so that I haven't spent much time trying to cure my trough.

If you really can't improve the trough then console yourself with the knowledge that you would never have known about it without REW.

Wise words indeed.
