M&K MX2500.......any good?
As the title really, I can pick one of these up at a discount to replace my SVS PB10 and cannot find any reviews on it.
Am hoping "Recruit" might be able to shed some light

Re: M&K MX2500.......any good?
Recruit has a MX 5100 and has been recently spied in the SVS Ultra power buy thread.
Could he be changing his spots? Is he tired of mates trying to get beer out of his sub? Couldn't he find a large enough porcelain bald eagle to adorn it?
I think we should be told.
Russell

Re: M&K MX2500.......any good?
Unfortunately Russ no big surprise in order as i will be keeping the MX5100 for some time to come, I want to hear the new SVS Ultra so will be trying it out for a little while.
NICMAC - Unfortunately that is one of the M&K subs that i have not had the pleasure of listening to but i am sure it will be very good indeed with some excellent slam and punch for movies...maybe Helicon might have more to add.

Re: M&K MX2500.......any good?
What is the availability like of M&K equipment now that they've gone out of business?
I use LCR750mk2 as my fronts but was looking to also get a pair of column surrounds later this year when funds allow and a quick look around shows plenty of places still selling. Will this remain so in 5 months time? Any word on parts availability and servicing should something break?

Re: M&K MX2500.......any good?
Availibilty has been quite good and there is still quite alot of stock out there, i have a friend who has just bought a whole S-150THX setup and MX350SF sub....but it will dry up eventually
Ref to warranty alot of shops are still offering full support of products that are sold and by all accounts M&K kit rarely goes wrong.
I hope Ken Kriesel comes back with some new products but at present all is quiet on that front, but i am sure he will

Actually the 2500 uses a similar amp to the 350; the amp puts out 1dB less, and has a slightly different power supply.
ALSO the [newer] SF SuperFast drivers have nearly 3dB more output (sensitivity) each than the earlier Discover Deep Bass drivers in the 350. That means the 2500 is simply not THX 'certified' and it has MORE output than the 350 MKII. ALSO since it has a variable phase control it is somewhat easier to integrate into ANY room with less phase correlation worries at or near the crossover frequency. The 350 only has a polarity switch.
The 2500's were one of the two most efficient-bang-for-the-buck (ahem, pound) subs M&K made; the other being the ridiculously underpriced MPS-5160, essentially the same thing as the 2500 in a larger cabinet. The larger cabinet gives yet another nearly 3dB more output.
And there's one more bit of cuteness built in to the 2500's: BOTH the speaker level inputs AND the RCA inputs have LOW CUT (correctly stated) filtered outputs; this means if you only have a 2-channel stereo system (i.e. not a HT receiver) you may run the preamp out into the RCA line level in of the sub, AND run another pair of RCA-RCA lines to your power amp, thereby filtering out below 80 going to the power amp. The benefits to this are many, and I would be glad to explain further.
SOME of the newest 350's had the SF drivers in them, so THEY have nearly 6dB more than the MKII's; the only way to tell is to look at the exact logo screened on the dustcovers. There is no way to know by looking at the s/n or he back plate which drivers are fitted.

Re: M&K MX2500.......any good?
Thanks Barry,
I guess when a former engineer says something's good it must be
Looks like this is the purchase for me
I was contemplating a cylinder it still is a tough call but...seeing as though i have M&K speakers and this sub was designed in to compliment........
Barry, I don't suppose you know how low it goes and if there is plenty of action round the 20hz mark? I don't doubt it's other abbilities with slam and punch

If running M&K speakers then an M&K sub would be a match made in heaven
Also seeing the info that Barry has provided then i would say that there will be considerable output at 20hz.

Nicmac.
I have spoke to Barry several times with questions about M & K speakers/subs etc. He is a fountain of knowledge, and any advice re M & K is most welcome on the forum.
It is said that he sleeps with a 5100 under his pillow for safety!!!
Welcome Barry!
