Dead sub - what next?

Hi, first post after following the plasma threads for months. My 4-year-old Mission FS2 sub seemed to die tonight halfway through Alexander. The light is on, but no sound, connections all OK. I'd be happy to buy a new sub, such as the BK one which gets good reviews, but looking at that site, the connections seem totally different. The Mission has all other speaker cables coming in via a single cable, with 5 pairs of individual cables going out of the sub.

How would I connect my speakers to the BK sub?

I'm happy enough with the FS2 speakers and just use them for DVDs, so I'm not desperate to change them, as this sub problem has come out of the blue and I'm about to buy a plasma. I hadn't planned on any other expense, but realise that things have probably changed a lot since I bought my set-up, so I'm open to new ideas.

Sorry about the long post, by the way

Re: Dead sub - what next?

Welcome to the forums.

Im afraid your issue is worse than you think. The subwoofer in your current setup powers the other speakers but that is only because they were designed to do so. A proper subwoofer will only power itself to power the other speakers you would need an AV amp.

So you could look at getting your current sub fixed, personally i doubt it be worth the cost or hassle, or get a new system. You could buy another all in one system or take a step up and invest in an AV amp and get speakers to go with it.

Think you need to sit down and work out how much you could afford to spend and then look at your options or ask advice in a more appropriate section on the forums.

Sorry for the bad news hope its not to much of a shock for you. Maybe see it as a chance to upgrade your sound system to compliment your new plasma your planning on getting.

Re: Dead sub - what next?

Thanks Morb. It does sound worse than I thought. I have a Marantz SR4200 receiver (amp?), so could I just connect my FS2 speakers direct to that and connect a new sub?

Re: Dead sub - what next?

Theoretically, yes you could, but the FS/2s are a bit unusual. Exactly this problem was discussed a couple of days ago here.
