What would happen

What would happen if you attached a passive subwoofer to an amp, say the new upcoming onkyo 705?

Would it work, would it blow, if it would work, will it work well if volume kept resonable?

thanks

Re: What would happen

It would make noise, but only from the speaker channel it was attached to.

What it wouldn't do is deliver any of the LFE channel or bass redirected from other speakers by the receiver.

So yes it would, but it would be rather pointless. Sorry.

Re: What would happen

If the question was a foil for 'I have one, can I use it or do I need to buy a new one?' then you could of course use an external amp fed from the line level sub out. BK sell suitable plate amps if you want to build a box, or you could use pretty much any amp with enough power.
