possible to connect sub to plasma without A/V receiver

probably a stupid question, but i haven't found a straight answer in my searches.

i have recently purchased a 42" panasonic PH9 plasma monitor. the unit has no speakers, but does have a built in stereo amplifier that i have attached to 2 small speakers. sound okay, but definately could need some extra bass.

in the next year, i will definately purchase an A/V receiver for 5.1 sound, but i was wondering if i couldn't just go ahead for the time being and buy a powered subwoofer to add to my 2 small satellites to get better bass response out of the TV's sound.

anyone know if it is possible to connect up a powered subwoofer to the speaker system of the TV without going to all the trouble of getting a new amp? how would i connect it up?

thanx

Re: possible to connect sub to plasma without A/V receiver

Dead easy, as long as the sub has speaker level connections and you can route the cables from the plasma to the sub, and then back out to the satellite speakers. You can spot the speaker level connections (which are very often on subs) as 4 4mm jack sockets or standard speaker wire teminations. The satellites are routed via the sub which will clip the bass off vi a high-pass filter (just like a normal cross-over) so preventing them being driven the signals they can't reproduce anyway.

No need for another amp BTW, as long as the sub is powered, as almost all are.
