So Duncan, you're happy with the low rumbles but not getting the midbass punch.
Could be a room null.
I was in one with the first position of my sub. It was difficult to tell by ear. I still had plenty of bass impact but I knew something was not perfect.
So I plotted the subs response at the listening position, 16-80Hz in 2Hz increments. Low and behold there was a 20dB null at 42-48Hz. Sounds a bit like your scenario.
I moved my sub to the other side of the room and now it plots pretty flat. The difference in sound was amazing.
Something for you to do this weekend.
If you go here-

At the bottom of the page you'll find some files containing various test tones you can download and use. There's a MP3 file for specifcally manually charting and plotting (15-80Hz Sweep, 1Hz increments 5 seconds each).
These are the correction values for the inaccuracies of the Tandy (RadioShack) analogue SPL meter.-
10Hz add 20
12.5Hz add 16.5
16Hz add 11.5
20Hz add 7.5
25Hz add 5
31.5Hz add 3
40Hz add 2.5
50Hz add 1.5
63Hz add 1.5
80Hz add 1.5
100Hz add 2
Doing all this will be very helpful even if it's not a room mode problem.
Cheers
