Looking for a new subwoofer

Hey..... Been looking for a new subwoofer around the £600-700 mark... Taken a look at the SVS subwoofers they look nice but not sure I can wait that long to get rid of my yamaha subwoofer, it's to go in my bedroom, need a good all round sub for music and films it's got to hit low and hard

Couldn't really find anything on hifibitz so if anyone else has any suggestions where to look.... richersounds suck these days

Should have included a little more info, front speakers are Monitor Audio B2's, rear are Mission 701's... center is a crappy yahama thing but does ok and reciever is a yamaha HTR-5640RDS.

Hi...just a few words, and a few experiences I've had along the way which may be of some use(hopefully!).

I've also had a few subs, incl a Kef and more recently a REL q200,and finally settled on an SVS PC-Ultra on the advice and recommendation of people here, and elsewhere.

In terms of value for money, and quality in absolute terms,I do think you'd have to go a long way to find anything offering even similar performance at the price point.

My own requirements for a sub were quite strict in that it had to deliver well extended, controlled bass, and to be able to work with an AV system using Tag,Krell and B&W components, and also with a stereo only system using a 300B triode amp and Quad ESLs...I was actually very pleasantly surprised...it does all of that.

The delivery time was well under a week from placing the order,so do have another think about SVS.

Under a week.... really? well that just put the SVS back high on the list.... it's amazing how poor the UK subwoofer market is the SVS that caught my eye was one of the box ones then realised how big it was, lol

So now looking at the 20-39PC-Plus gets reviewed highly, which model did you get and how much did it end up costing you after VAT/Import tax and such?

Hmmmmmm, anyone got any suggestions on a good subwoofer for mostly music a lot of house/dance but some movies as well.... don't think I can wait to get the SVS.... seems as though i've just killed my yamaha sub.... oops.... lol

As you might gather I need it to come from a UK source

*Edit* Would I be better off with 2 smaller subs than 1 larger one?

If you're buying from scratch and aren't reasonably proficcient in subwoofer setup then a single better one would be better.

A new model has come into play in the last couple of days that I have high hopes for and falls well within your budget - the BK Monolith here:
http://www.bkelec.com/new/HiFi/Sub_Woofers/monolith.htm
Looks to be a stunning performer and would leave you a bit of change to upgrade your centre speaker to the appropriate Monitor Audio one.

Na.... not really buying from scratch, was going to replace my subwoofer anyway but blew it a couple of hours ago.... oops.... apart from the sub the rest of my system is ok, the center could do with replacing at some time but it's only used during movies anyway.... only thing i don't like about the monolith is it looks kinda ugly, they don't show it having a front cover and theres been no reviews on it yet

shows it having a cover in the pictures in the link above, but you will have to wait for someone here to take the plunge before we get an idea of perfomance i'm afraid.

Well.... been looking and subs and have seen these.....

Velodyne SPL-800 MK2 Subwoofer - £699
MJ Acoustics Reference 200 Subwoofer - £650
Monitor Audio FastBass FB210 Subwoofer - £550
KEF PSW3500 Active Subwoofer - £600
VIBE Zeta MK2 Subwoofer - £720

Anyone know what the performance of any of them is? any advice on which would be best? sorry for bugging you all, it's just i'm already missing bass.... and this sort of money isn't a small amount to go throwing away, i'd go demo some subs if there was a shop anywhere near me

I don't think anybody has heard all of those, or even a large fraction of them. It follows that most of the opinions on those units will already be available on these forums and elsewhere if you do a search for them.

I really think trying to get a demo of the units would be the best option considering how much you're hoping to spend.

ive got a vibe zeta and tbh for the money i think its a great sub all tho ive only heard a couple of others both being 10" subs and for outright trouser flapping grunt the vibe left them for dead id say its great with movies but i dont use it for music so couldnt comment on that..i bought this blind and have been happy with its performance but i wouldnt mind hearing another of the big subs that seems popular on this forum a svs or Velodyne to compare maybe.... its a lot of money and a hard av item to buy i feel ...good luck in your search
