Thumbs up An SVS alternative..

For people who think that SVS is the only cheaper option to get a high quality subwoofer, this might be of interest:

Rocket Loudspeakers UFW-10 Subwoofer

This subwoofer goes less deep, and plays a bit less loud than what SVS offers, but:

- it offers high WAF (!)
- it's very small (33cm^3, or 13inch^3)
- it is cheap ($599, without transport)
- it's fast and musical (according to this reviewer for music it performs equally well as a PB2+!)
- it has a parametric equalizer

This is one impressive sub!

Just like SVS they ship world-wide, which will be cheaper considering it weighs less and is much smaller. A bigger model (dual-12inch, around $1500) has been announced, coming to the market later in the year.

It looks great for the money (a tad under £500 atm I would estimate), particularly for music but as many people buy a sub for movies I think the limited extension will prove important.

"Disc after disc, down to 25 Hz, the UFW-10 was the match for the PB2+, I have also had the Velodyne FSR-18 in the same room, for music, I will take the UFW-10 over the Velodyne. "

I don't think that anyone thinks that SVS is the only cost effective option as HSU springs immediately to mind as well as Rocket and I am sure that there are others out there.

Both HSU and Rocket have an enthusiastic fan base on American forums as does SVS but the latter has the distinct advantage of a growing knowledgebase in UK now as well.

If anyone wants to be a guinea pig I'm sure that we would all appreciate a review of either a Rocket or HSU product as someone has to go first

Any volunteers daring to take the plunge, or maybe someone reckless enough to already have done so?

They have an offer where 2x UFW-10 subs only costs $999 + shipment.

Reading the manual to that sub is quite interesting. A good expalnation of how to use the EQ.

Looks like it could be a worthy consideration as they list international numbers too for contact.

What about the input voltage? I can't see if they offer a 220V/240V version.

There was a voltage selector switch that I saw, maybe on the smaller sub?

They sell abroad (world-wide), so I guess only the outlet-connector might be a problem. Will check though..

All right, I sent them an email and they replied the same day. They said that they currently do not have a 220V UFW-10, but will in the very near future.

I think you'd be also interested in reading another part of the email their representative sent me:

Quote:
This woofer, unlike many of the huge-box and tube subwoofers currently on the market, was designed specifically for QUALITY bass - not maximum output, maximum extension, etc.

As you may have noticed, the current trend in the subwoofer "game" is quoting maximum (peak) SPL's and low-frequency extension. Rarely do you see any talk on how the bass actually SOUNDS to your ears...this was our main goal with the UFW - to design a woofer that would do things many people had never experienced. We aimed to design a product that would be more than adequate for rooms up to approximately 4500 cubic feet, but would focus first on an accurate, detailed, and defined presentation, and THEN on output and low-frequency extension. As you may have read, we succeeded in a big way! The UFW-10, in most rooms, will play down to about 25 Hz and has more than enough output to reach reference levels at around 30 Hz in even large rooms. It's not the most powerful, or lowest subwoofer on the market, but you've likely never heard bass so clean, detailed, and fast.

Interesting statement. Sounds like they want to out do SVS, Velodyne etc.

I'm not too struck on the finishes though. A bit shiny for me.

It's the WAF that's important, you only need to listen!

Another one that's hardly ever mentioned is the Nubert NuLine AW-1000.
Nice and not to shiny real wood veneers on them. I was getting one but bought a Jamo THX set instead.

Are the Rocket speakers Chinese?
