Wow
Having never beleived much in the hype around subs and managed with a 5.0 system for years, I finally dipped my toe in the water and bought an MJ Ref 100. Took me a while to integrate it properly, although it still needs fine tuning. Temptation, as always is to think 'I can't hear it' and turn it up. I quickly realised that rather than 'hearing' it, best results are gained when you only notice it when you turn it off in the middle of something.
Anyway, wow. What a difference. Watched Deep Blue Sea last night (crap) and the effect was awesome. Brilliant. I was concerned that it would affect my music listening but setting Xover to 60 and keeping the level low beefed everything up nicely and really allowed my speakers to sing.
I'm well impressed and would recommend anyone who is sceptical about subs to have a go. Trouble is, now I have yet another expesive upgrade path to follow.

thanks

Steve,
Thanks for the post. I too have managed on a 5.0 system for some time and have been constantly thinking about the 'Sub' question. It's great to know that I haven't been the only one that has thought this way .I'm going to demo a couple at the end of the month and hopefully will be enjoying the same results that you have had after that.
Regards
John

So far I have my MJ on the low level (crappy supplied) lead only. This will be replaced shortly with a Mark Grant lead instead.
I use my Denon 2900 as CD/SACD/DVD-A and set speakers to small. I then have the xover on the sub at 60 and this seems to work well. The 2900 xover is at 80 but it seems to roll off well below that and setting the sub at 80 makes my music muddy and coloured.
For movies, the processor does the work and I set the xover to 60 for added oomph from the floorstanders. This way I can use the pro's levels to adjust movie bass and the DVD's to do music. My Rotel pro also allows to have adjustable boost settings for different signals, like DD, DTS, 2 ch etc.
I think the key thing is backing it off. I have heard subs before and they must have been over cranked because the overall effect was appaling. The proponents would sit there saying' hey, feel that bass' and I'm thinking 'this sounds crap mate'. I have mine set lower for music and it does a great job of bringing out those kick drums and low bass notes . For rock music, it gives it real drive and feel. For movies, it's a bit higher but not overpowering. Some scenes can sound quite menacing!
Not sure I want to bother with high level as this works for me just fine. I guess having bass management on the DVD helps greatly.
As for on/off it's just left on at the mo, seems fine and stays cool and quiet when not in use.

Now you have an essential item in your system
I would consider a bfd to tame the room response of your sub
i was amazed the diff a £90 processor box can make
search this subwoofer section for more info on the bfd

Thanks for the info......I was considering connecting the Tannoy Sub to the centre speaker as suggested on the MJ Acoustics site with a high level neutrik speakon lead ...how much benefit this is likely to have I am not sure as I haven't tried it yet...The MJ sub would be connected by phono low level directly to the amp...Where I am confused is how a Neutrik lead may enhance my experience?
thanks again

I've recently joined the MJ Acoustics club as well. Out of interest, what do you have the low level gain set at? Mine is at about 20% round from the minimum marker.
Cheers
James

Mine's about 12 o'clock but I guess it depends on the output level of the processor. I can boost mine a bit if I choose which would involve lowering the level on the sub. I have not yet set it up with my meter properly, just mucking about with levels, xovers and positioning at the mo.
