Should I replace my sub or add a new one?

Should I replace my sub or add a new one?

I have an REL Studio 1, now 12 years old. It used to be used in my music system but I've set-up a cinema room and am using it as a sub to support the front speakers through the high-level XLR input connected to the speaker outputs.
Set-up is:
Denon DVD3800
Arcam AVR500
JVC HD7500 projector
Vibe Monolith floor standing speakers for front/surround plus Vibe centre speaker
Polk Audio in-wall speakers for rear speakers.
REL Studio 1

The sub is obviously very old, but seems to perform reasonable. However, would I notice an improvement replacing it with a new sub, such as a BK XLS400, or even adding another sub for .1 output from the AVR500?

Any advice welcome

You should only really add a sub to your existing one if it's the same identical sub. I can't seem to find a Studio 1 anywhere on the net, only a studio ii and iii. These are quite high-end, so I doubt you'd get any improvement from an XXLS 400 in this case.

Thanks mfife. It was high-end; I bought it in a sale and it was £1000 back in 2000. Lovely piece of furniture as well as a sub though. I've relocated it and adjusted the settings tonight and, as you say, it probably isn't worth changing; bass seems well extended and the room was shaking without boominess. I think I'll save my pennies. Might try using a second cable to the low level input from the AVR sub-out; that would only cost a few £; I presume I can use both inputs at the same time.

Yes, definitely get a decent sub cable and use the low level input for movies, to allow the AVR to do all the bass-management. Keep the XLR for music. There should be seperate controls on the back of the sub for lo-level / hi-level crossover and gain.
