New Monolith or 6 year Old Mackie HRS120?

I am considering an offer on my wanted thread, and wondered what the masses thought.

What would you buy with your £500?

Haven't heard the Mackie and although impressive looking, I'd probably plump for the Monolith. There's no substitute for physics, it's brand new, and you have loads of guys on here with full knowledge about it's performance whereas the HRS120 is more of an unknown and most likely not tested alongside the Monolith.

Sorry, I didnt get back to your message. I've no direct experience of the Mackie, but I'll take a look and see how it looks, and give an opinion FWIW.

Mackie is quite a well known name over the pond and I think that they come from a professional background manufacturing monitors to sell to studios.

There used to be one or two Mackie owners on the forum but I haven't seen either around for a while but they did speak highly of their subs

4 - 0 to the Monolith at this point.

Interestingly the potential seller of the Mackie says his HRS120 is a BIG upgrade from the Monolith, I wonder, is there anyone else here that has has experience of both?

I have to say I am erring on the side of the Mono, partly because of the forum hype, and partly because of the look. The Mackie ain't pretty!

My reading of the specs (like most on here, I've not heard the Mackie) actually makes this less of a clear cut choice, on performance grounds, than you might expect.

The Mackie is nearly the size of a Monolith, but uses a passive radiator in place of the port employed in the Monolith, so they're both efficient large designs with a similar tuning point.

I think the Mackie could be a very good buy, but it ain't pretty and it is old without a warranty so that is a consideration. However, it is one of the few PR/ported subs I've seen that uses servo feedback, so it should favour low distortion over output at all costs. This alone makes it really interesting to my eyes, but I am more than averagely risky when it comes to subwoofery.

How about you buy the Mackie and then lend it to me?

Russell

Thanks for the input everyone.

I am erring on the side of the new, well supported, much loved and good looking Monolith at present.

That's probably the safe bet, but it will still result in a noticeable extra bottom end Oomph over your old SB12. Actually, there's no probably about it....

On the plus side, I was actually quite taken back at the compact size of the SB 12 (smaller than even my REL Q100e). It astonishingly impressive given its size and I was somewhat taken back by that, weak link or not.

Oh, without a shadow of a doubt. Size is everything in the sub world, and after owning an Ultra the SB12 wouldnt get a look in for me from new (as it probably wont for you after you experience your new sub), I could pick out its limitations before the pre movie logo's had completed.

One question though, cant you demo the Mackie?

Unfortunately I couldn't demo them unless an owner of either local to me comes forward!
