REL Stadium ?

A friend has offered to sell me his REL Stadium sub ? Its the mk 1 version, I used to have one of the REL Stratas years ago, the original model and was always impressed by REL Subs, When I had the Strata I always longed for one of the bigger models either the Storm or the Stadium, I think the Stadium was around the £1000 mark and that was 10-20 years ago ( I think) What would it be like today ? in sound have subs moved on since then ? thanks

What is it worth ?

I have a REL Stadium 1 and a B1 lying idle. My S1 only has high level inputs but I liked using it for music and the B1 was even better. The S1 struggled with bass heavy movie LFE though; as do a lot of subs. I replaced the REL's with an SVS PB13U.

subs have moved on a great deal since then

as is always the same with technology and materials,
some of the subs today for around 4-600 quid would probably wipe the floor with it, maybe even cheaper

i know some of the BK subs which people on here own(me included soon, as iv ordered a bk monolith)are very good indeed, iv not heard a bad review yet, so much so that i ordered one without listening to it first

it really depends on your budget tho

if your mate lets you have it for say £100 then take it, but for another 100 quid you can have a brand new bk gemini sub which by all accounts is very good for the price

they are hand built too and the finish is apprently excellent

hope iv helped

good luck

A Gemini wont touch a Stadium

Rels focus was never really uber movie performance, like SVS's has been. The sound quality is among the very best though, and IMO they are the most reliable subs Ive come across thus far. They might not go to the depths of an SVS ultra, but sound quality for music and movie soundtracks will be top notch, and with a stadium, movies wont be all that bad either.

REL reliability has been top notch.

My S1 is now 15 years old and has never had any issues. The gain pot is now slightly scratchy but that's probably through lack of movement. I have a spare waiting anyway should I need it. The power switch neon has faded a bit, I have a spare for that too. The sub looks and sounds like new after all this time.

I still have it because it is a good sub and I was very happy with it but my system and tastes sort of out grew it. Lack of low level input was the main frustration, there was no DD5.1 when it was built, plus I wanted something that didn't strain with the likes of Pulse et al.

I am not going to let it go for penny's just because of its age. One day I will find a good home for it, probably one with music more in mind than sub 20hz LFE

What about sub-20hz music then?

I didn't get where I am today not having sub-20Hz.
