B&W PV1 - Dual Use for both Hi-Fi & AV

I am considering purchasing a B&W PV1 and using the same sub for two systems in the same room, one AV and one Hi-Fi. I can see the B&W sub has both low and high level inputs.

The low level input will be fed to an AV amp and the high level to a stereo power amp. Note - the same left and right speakers are connected to the power amp
and I use the pre out from the AV receiver to the power amp.

Question is can I have both inputs connected ready to go (although not played at the same time). Is anyone on here using their PV1 in the same way for both Hi-Fi & AV listening with different amps?

Thanking you in advance.

i may be selling my gloss black pv1 mate

not sure how much for

im replacing it for a bk monolith

reason for changing is depth of bass as its a ported cabinet whereas the pv1 is sealed and therefore cant reach below 25hz

its good for music no doubt but i like really deep bass

thats why i ordered the monolith earlier today

If you are selling the PV1, you need to put it up in the classifieds. Discussing should really be kept there. A quick mention here is fine, but no deals should be done/discussed here, as per forum rules

As for running both outputs, that will be fine. When you wish to use the high level connection though, you will have to put your processor into pure audio mode so it tells the second amp to run the main speakers in full range mode, otherwise the high level connection wont have any content below your crossover point (generally 80hz) to read from.

i will do moonfly but i aint defo selling it yet, im waiting to get my monolith first to see what thats like, but to be fair i could prob do with the money to put to a new amp as iv found out that the yam rxv765 which i paid over 500 quid for only a few months back is now 350 ish, whats all that about?? im now looking at the 1065

i know this is for the amp section of the forum but i needed to vent my anger

would there a significant differende in sound quality??

i can not wait for my new mono tho, the 3 week waiting time is gonna kill me, gonna feel like a lifetime

There will be a difference, but it will still have the characteristic Yam sound, so the difference wont be as night and day as it would if your say switched to an amp from another manufacturer. Generally the sound will be the same (unless you change your speakers as well etc), but will sound more powerful, effortless, and probably a bit more dynamic.

If your talking about the sub, then there will be a definite difference. Maybe not to much at first as the sub runs in, but there will be overtime. If once you have become a little accustomed to the Monolith, you switch back for a quick test, this is when the difference will be most profound.

Basically, whatever people are willing to pay really. I think you would do well to get 500, but wouldnt think that impossible if someone came along who specifically wanted one. I can only really guess though, they dont come up for sale much.

Mark I would definately be interested in your PV1 if you ARE selling. Obviously this will need to be done in accordance with the mods and trading rules here.

I was just thinking the PV1 would probably match my B&W LCR7's and CCM80's that are going in now.

How would the PV1 compare to an SVS PC12-NSD or PC12-Plus ?

hi groover, if and when i decide to sell it, ill put it in the classifieds mate

i just cant wait for my mono df to arrive

il have to book the day off when its being delivered, ill be like a kid in a toy shop, first song on: sub focus - timewarp

then maybe some others

then its movie time

just wondering tho, i know its trial and error regarding setting up to my system and room, but would it help if i upped my crossover to 90 or 100hz to work well with the m1's

just a thought

I had the mt30 system before I upgrade the fronts to the CM range. Ive retained the pv1 and two m1's as rears.

When I was using the MT30, I found a definite improvement in uping the crossover to about 100Hz. Gives the M1's a bit more breathing space if you know what I mean?

Thanks Mark. If you could keep me posted... The classifieds is not somewhere I frequent that often.

Otherwise I may have to buy an SVS

hi groove

will do mate

they are good subs so you wouldnt be dissappointed, plus they look great, word of warning tho, if you have small children, DO NOT let them near it, if they poke it whilst its working at loud volumes it can break little fingers, the front of the speakers are metal

to be clear. i dont have any children yet

im getting a monolith for the power and the low end

Thanks again Mark. No kids here yet, so will be fine for now

I know the PV1 gets great reviews and I also am aware that it is not the best at low end, low frequency bashing but is a good start into the world of subs. Can always move on if I find I want more.

Again, keep me posted.

Cheers

Paul

I bought a PV1 with high hopes since What HiFi quoted "gut wrenching bass".. hmmm don't know where they got that from. I also had the Tannoy R15 sub at the time and moved the PV1 into position disconnected the R15, SPL'd it and watched some movies.

Yes the PV1 produced bass, but not gut wrenching or low as the R15 (which in my opinion is required for AV). I've just sold my R15 for £175 quid too.. compare that to the cost of a PV1. So the PV1 is going, and a DF Monolith is on its way.

To be honest my 10" Paradigm I used to have was far better in the bass department for movies and that is a very cheap sub to buy secondand.

hi dude

thats the same reason i went for the pv1 in the first place, at first i thought it was good, which it is compared to my old kef 2005.2 sub, but when i played some music with low frequencies in, it couldnt go that low,my old yamaha sw205 could drop a lot lower, but then it is sealed and it is small so lets cut it some slack

personally i think its a marvelous piece of engineering, but i think it is overpriced, but then i think you are paying for the actual manufacturing process, which im sure you would agree is a lot more technical than a box of mdf

it looks ace but its probably not very cheap to make, which reflects in the price

but if style is high on your agenda and you have the money, then there aint many that are as nice

Hi Mark,

yes you're right its a good piece of engineering and looks the part. My main gripe is probably with What HiFi, I've always been a fan of the magazine, but I'm beginning to think more and more that they are in the pockets of certain manufacturers and don't start me on the What HiFi hdmi reviews! I have stopped buying it as a magazine, I prefer the real world reviews on here and elsewhere...

The PV1 is a good attractive Wife friendly sub, but like you say not for nearly a £1000. The PDR10 I had was small too, similar footprint, but much better low end bass IMHO.

hi again dude

i no longer buy what hi-fi either, its good for finding out about new kit but i tend not to pay any attention to their reviews anymore, iv agree, iv had the suspicion that the likes of b&w and a few others may pay them to 'big up' their products as it seems that some companies cant put a foot wrong ever

Thanks for the feedback.

I understand there may be better subs for use for movies but the reason why I am looking at getting a PV1 is for music using the high level connection.
Any thoughts on this sub just for music?

Its at its best with music due to being sealed and is fast. However as is pointed out, most subs have high level input.

do as i did

i did a search on the whole forum for the subject of my interest, then see what you think after reading what people have posted

i thought the pv1 was great but after reading peoples posts, its now apparent that the likes of the bk xxls400 is a far better sub, great with music and fully at home with movies, but the best bit.........less than half price of the pv1

ok, it dont look as good but you can get different finishes like gloss black

have a look to see what people have wrote on here first, then decide

good luck
