I have an Onkyo receiver that does not have a sub pre-out. Is there any active sub I can buy that would work? I vaguely recall reading that the sub must have speaker line level inputs, but I'm not sure if I remember correctly, as wouldn't that mess something up if the receiver is also sending power? Any suggestions on an entry-level sub that would work (~$250) would be appreciated.

I have a BK Electronics XLS300 sub - it can accept pre-out signal AND hi-level speaker signal input via a neutrik cable (supplied).

Try the BK Electronics range of subs - i think they all have the neutrik cable connection

The cheaper Gemini II also has the same hi level input. This is however still £200 which will be over the $250 budget.

does your amp have any pre-outs???

if it does, i.e left and right, then you could possibly get a cheap 'y' splitter which would connect to both the left and right pre-out on the back of your amp and then connect a mono sub cable to the single female end of the 'y' splitter and then to your sub

downsides to this is; you cant control the crossover in the amps menu's, you will have to do it on the back of your sub
