Sub satisfied

I've been trying to give my m8 some good advice about updating his aging home cinema system, I managed to convince him that the subwoofer on his 16yr old celestion sub sat setup is not really up to the task. So he's gone and ordered a svs pb13 and the eq1( didn't have to hypnotize him or anything) , The eq1 arrived yesterday and the sub should be hear on sat afternoon i think. Can't wait to get it all set up for him and see the look on his face. he's not got a clue how much better this is gonna make his system sound, the sat speakers are actually pretty decent but the sub he's got just now is cack to be perfectly blunt.

I've not set up a sub with an eq1 before but have some experience with svs pc13(pretty much the same as pb ), It's quite a large room about 7m x 4m with a high ceilings so i was thinking 20hz tuning ?, Just wondered what the guys on here thought and is there anything i should look out for with regards to the eq1 set up. Any advice would be much appreciated, Regards Jase.

Re: Sub satisfied

Cant really help with the EQ-1, but if you could post your comparative views on the box vs cylinder I would be very grateful

Re: Sub satisfied

The pc13 (another friend of mines) was partnered with a top of the range Denon receiver at the time and his rooms quite a bit smaller with stone floors/walls , the pb13 is gonna be partnered with an entry level onkyo in a larger room with wooden floors high ceilings. Not sure how i could really make any valuable comparison for you moonfly, If i had the two of them at one place then maybe, I'll certainly post my thoughts though. regards Jase.

My thoughts,

Not really what moonfly was after however ,

As I mentioned above I've previously helped a friend to set up a Svs pc13 into his system(No As_eq1),This week another mate got the pb13 but after reading about the As-eq1 he decided he might as well go the whole way and just get this as well. I managed to nip round last Saturday when the sub arrived and quickly plumb it into his system but with no time to spare that day the As-eq1 and any proper type of setup would have to wait. Even without proper setup my m8 remarked about there being a whole new type of bass present. I found it ok to be honest but was a little worried that possibly the sub that I had recommended was going to outclass his ageing sat speakers by a considerable margin .

So I set some time aside this weekend to get back up and try and get the setup done properly.

First things first ,
Get the software installed, ARGHHH!!!what the heck am I doing wrong, no matter what I did I could not get it to install, Just kept on getting an error message. After about an hour or so trying all my limited computer skills I admitted defeat a called the Guys from subsonics for some advice. They sent me a link via e-mail to get the new updated version of the software with the firmware update. Still no joy. Back on the phone and I got the email address for the tec support fellow at svs, before going down this route though we managed to borrow another laptop. This laptop was vista 64bit the first was xp, we tried to install the latest version of the software first but again it failed to install(different error code though). Might as well try the original software again on this other laptop I thought but to be honest I was beginning to lose faith. Worked no problem this time( Stupid bloody computers or me quite possibly). Time to get this As-Eq1 set up know, Although I found this fairly straight forward I know for a fact that your average man on the street would quite possibly struggle(this is why I'm setting this up and not my m8) Probably took me about an hour and a half as opposed to the forty mins suggested in the manual ,I was taking my time though. One point to note is that both connections from the back of the Eq1 need connected to your receiver at the same time( you will need an extra rca to rca cable but only during set up process)

And the end result, Incredible.

I mean this in all sincerity. I was not expecting there to be such a massive difference. Not only was the sub integrating well with the old sat speakers the actual bass quality was vastly improved, "you can hear what type of drums are playing now" friends comment not mine, and he was dead right , It might seem a bit extreme spending so much on a sub and eq device when you are only using an entry level onkyo receiver with older sat speakers but I can confirm unequivocally It works, It sounds far better than it has any right to,even without the latest firmware. Software problems aside I can't recommend the Eq1 enough, Of course it helps to have a cracking big sub as well, but if it ain't Eq'ed your probably not hearing it anywhere near it's potential. So while I couldn't really do a meaningful comparison between the subs as asked , I shall definitely be recommending the eq1 . Regards Jase.

re. the software install issues: Some have found burning the files to CD and installing from there works when it refuses to install on the laptop/PC

Glad you got it working eventually, the updated software actually works completely differently with regards to the setup procedure so make sure you read the new manual if you do get round to installing it

Sounds like you are a very good mate to have
