which subwoofer??

Hi folks
I have moved into this part of the forum for advice following my purchase of a yamaha rxv 1065.
I am slowly blowing my badget as i previously bought a new TV and so am keeping the speakers from my old kenwood 21 series which are 6 ohms, have a good output and still sound good to my ears...
I have been on ebay loooking at a few mordaunts (the auctions end in 4 to 5 days) which were suggested in a previous thread - would this be a good choice or are there other subs out there that might meet my needs? i would like the cost to be kept low so a good second hand ebay item or something for sale on the forum would do.
Cheers for taking the time to read this far!

Re: which subwoofer??

Maybe worth keeping a eye here for a known quantity sub from a member, who has upgraded rather than possibly someone getting rid of something problematic on ebay?

You dont say what the upper end of your budget is so hard to advise or point you to a specific topic on a brand/model make. If its £200 the a BK Gemini MK 2 may suit, but without knowing how big your listening room is it could be dwarfed and leave you wanting more.

Re: which subwoofer??

I used to have a Kenwood Series 21 system, excellent for the money. My mother still has my old system and its still sounding good and going strong. I had an old Rel Q100e sub that I gave her to put with it and that also still sounds great and the system works very well.

I'll keep an eye on the classifieds, but if your looking for new subs, then for £100 the Connected Acoustics sub10 is about as good as it gets, the Wharfedale SW15 is around £150 and the BK Gemini 2 is £200. All will be a good addition.

Re: which subwoofer??

thanks for replies so far - i have looked at both the wharfdale diamond and the bk gemini - budget being around £200 - but any good 2nd hand around that price i would also consider.
the room size for my set up is as follows - 22 feet by 14 feet....TV is at a far wall with all the main speakers and the side speakers sit half way down the room apprx 11 feet (where i have my swivel chair) - i have a corner unit settee at the far end for viewing so TV is the full 22 feet away.
The sub will be in a corner next to the TV away from the window - and i am detached - so no neighbours!!
hope this helps with ideas for the sub.

ps - i still love the 21 series - but am i right in thinking it was the last stereo kenwood made? it cost me almost £1000 10 (?) years ago- and i always wanted to save for the laser karaoke unit

Re: which subwoofer??

I think it may just have been the last or one of the last bits of home audio they did. Shame as you just dont get speakers and amps like that for the money anymore , the ribbon tweeters were very good.

On the subs, any mentioned will work well in your room, and I would go for the BK offering. I'll keep an eye on the classifieds and post if anything worthwhile pops up though

Re: which subwoofer??

You only need the mono one, but some people go for the stereo one anyway in case they can use the other "half" for something else. If it's one you can split down the middle you'll get a spare mono interconnect which is useful for connecting an SPL meter or even running a composite signal to a projector.

Well - i have had this sub for nearly a week and would like to thank everyone for their help - it really has added depth to movies - i watched star trek 3 nights in a row!! pretty amazing with the deep bass.
Its transformed my viewing - definitely more like the movies!!.
ps - still tweaking it as i start to understand what the dials do in the back - as it can be seriuosly loud
