Subwoofer packed in - need advice

I wonder if one of you could help me please, as I'm a bit out of touch with hi-fi and home cinema these days.

I bought a Canton CD102 5.1 system from a poster on this site who was selling them a few years ago, and in the last few days the sub has packed up. It looks like the seller is no longer selling Canton stuff and I'd have to go direct to Canton in Germany for a replacement sub, assuming I can get hold of one from them.

I have seen that I can get hold of a Wharfedale SW150 sub for £150 from superfi and was wondering if that would be suitable for my existing set-up? The Canton satellite speakers aren't much bigger than Coke cans but they do a decent job and their small size also keeps me out of the divorce courts.

Will the Wharfedale integrate with my Canton's or is it overkill? I don't really want to buy a complete new set-up, although I am open to advice about other subwoofers, should the Wharfedale SW150 not be suitable.

Thanks in advance to whoever replies, I appreciate it.

Re: Subwoofer packed in - need advice

What do you use to power the speakers, do you have an amp of some sort. Do the satellite speakers plug into your amp or the sub itself.

Looking at the system stats, and as long s you can power the sats from a separate amp, then the Wharfedale sub will be fine. If you can push to the £200 mark though, the BK Gemini 2 will be better still, which is everything when using sats.

Thanks for your reply moonfly.

I'm using a Denon AVR-1906. The sats are wired into the receiver and the sub is connected via rca leads.

I can stretch to £200 so will have a look at the BK Gemini 2.

Re: Subwoofer packed in - need advice

Well worth a look , and you'll be surprised at how it can transform your system. Whatever sub you use though, make sure you get setup advice as it will differ from the old sub a little. Your speakers low end response is 80hz, and that info is required when setting up so just keep a note of that

All the best.
