I upgraded from the logitech z680 5.1 speakers to bookshelfs a few months ago cos of the lack of midrange sound, and I had no idea what I was doing, but ppl from here and another forum helped me out loads.
It wasnt smooth sailing at all cos I ran in to quite a few probs getting it sounding right. Cos with pc speakers its just a matter of plugging in and away you go, and sounds pretty good. Like I may of been unlucky but I couldnt get my bookshelfs, amp and sub sounding right at all, no matter how much tweaking I did......................
Anyway when I began about 5months ago.
I had 4 denon sc-m50 50watt bookshelf speakers that I had for about 10yrs or so, so I could use them and it would save me quite abit of money.
Then I got a 10yr old yamaha amp off ebay, costed £60 and was in superb condition. So while I was waiting for the amp to come, I got my bookshelfs on the wall.
When the amp came I connected all up and used my 2 old eltax 60watt subs that I had lying around.
Then I bought another pair of denon speakers for £60 of ebay cos I really missed not having a centre speaker.
I didnt buy anything for about 2 months, spent about £130 in total at this point. I wasnt happy with at sound at all and no matter what I did I just couldnt get it sounding right. It didnt help matters having weedy 6" 60watt subs either, cos I couldnt crank up the vol at all without the subs bottoming out and distort badly.
So then I decided to buy a decent qual sub to see If that would help me be a bit happier with the sound qual. So bought a xls200 10" 275watt sub for £300, and that improved the sq loads but I wasnt still happy cos listening at low vol sounded quite muggy.
A few weeks later the front left channel started to fail on the amp, so I went back on ebay and found a 4yr old yamaha dsp-AX759SE and the owner had had it from new 18months ago, so it was in prestine condition. I manage to get that for £140..
It took me about a month to fine tune the amp, but the amp had sorted the mugginess at low vol out.
I can now say Im 110% happy with how it sounds, and that was the last thing i bought, so all together its costed me about £570 from when I started about 5months ago.

So basically if your thinking about going down the bookshelf, amp route, be prepared to have probs along the way.. Also if you have limeted amount of money, go down the ebay route like Ive done and just buy a amp and speakers first. then slowly upgrade from there onwards..
I thought I wasnt ever going to get mine sounding right and I prob was a fool chucking more and more money at it, but in the end due to the amp upgrade I finally got it sounding right and its paid off big time, cos it sounds fantastic, and I prob wont upgrade it for a few yrs
