Help - Faulty Sub, Repair Or Replace? Options ...

Hey folks,

I bought my original home theatre setup back in 2002/2003 (I think ... a long time ago anyways). The Marantz SR4200? receiver which I bought back then packed up last year and I purchased a new Onkyo one as a replacement as I wanted DTS:MA etc for Blu-Ray so the Marantz packed up at a good time.

However my Kef PSW1000 Subwoofer has developed a whistle and some crackling when powered on. Even if I disconnect all cables except the power, the noise is still there.

It ran out of warranty many moons ago.

My options seem to be try and get the sub repaired which I assume could cost in the region of £100, or replace the sub with a new one.

My setup at the moment consists of:

Onkyo TX-SR605
Sony Playstation 3 60Gb
Marantz CD player (Forgot model number)
Kef Cresta 3 floorstanders
Kef Cresta 2 rear bookshelf speakers
Kef Cresta C - centre speaker
Samsung 42" 1080p LCD TV

All the speakers are finished in Cherry wood. Therefore if I was to purchase a new sub it would need to be in Cherry to match or as in the PSW1000's case, dark apple as it is a close colour match.

It's been a long time since I've shopped for speakers & subs etc so what are the recommendations, if I was to purchase a new sub? Who makes them in those colours mentioned and are they any good?

Or should I repair what I have?

Budget? ... £400 max. (My other speakers aren't exactly top of the range so no point buying a top of the range sub).

PS: The room size is about 4m square (Approx)

Budget £400 then a BK 400 would be on the money and not 2 big, as said here before you can always turn it down to fit the room.

I've never heard of "BK" as a manufacturer. What are they like?

What's the finish like? The Kef's I have are really well finished, no marks, no dodgy corners etc ... Are these also of a high standard?

Is this the only recommended sub in the price range? I'll have to read a few reviews etc.

Cheers guys.

slightly more expensive is the Monolith if you have room for one its to big for my room but is the top of the range in the BK range and when you read the reviews you'll want one

If your room is 4m square then you should be able to find a nice spot for a DF-Monolith and I can assure you you will definitely never be disappointed. I still have a huge smile on my face

Re: Help - Faulty Sub, Repair Or Replace? Options ...

I bought What:Hifi over the weekend and there's no BK subs in the glossary area near the back of the mag?

Who are BK? What makes them so much better than other brands such as B&W, Kef, MJ Acoustics & Wharfedale?

Re: Help - Faulty Sub, Repair Or Replace? Options ...

They are a major player in AV equipment but dont sell to retail outlets and all the subs are hand built here in GB, and you can only buy direct. I would read all the posts here then decide why they are so well recommended.

you wont be disappointed and bare in mind all the retail outlets have stuff in where the majority is made in china (a brand name comes to mind ) and the importer then sells to the retailer who then sells to you at a massive mark up

obviously there are lots of quality subs out there but bass per £ BK takes a lot of beating.
