Total Newbie Question - how do I connect my Velodyne to my receiver???

Sorry, I am sure this should be obvious, but I can't figure it out - even after reading the manual!

How do I connect my Yamaha RX3900 receiver to a Velodyne CHT-Q series subwoofer.

The subwoofer has stereo (l+r) inputs (all I have owned in the past have had mono inputs) and the yamaha amp doesn't have a subwoofer output where all the other speaker outputs are located.

Thanks, and please ignore my stupidity - I am sure the answer will be obvious once I know.

Re: Total Newbie Question - how do I connect my Velodyne to my receiver???

You want to connect the Pre-OUT Subwoofer on the Yamaha to either the left or right channel on the Velodyne

http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/...?CNTID=5017925

It's just above the middle of the three orange digital coaxial inputs on the Yamaha

Edit: apologies that one's an input, the one you want is a couple further to the right as you correctly identified it.

Ok, thanks. It was the left and right that was confusing me.

Why does the subwoofer have left and right channels?

If your amp doesn't have a dedicated sub woofer channel ie is HiFi not an AV receiver, but has stereo pre-outs, you can send the full range left and right channel to the sub for the sub to extract the LFE frequencies from.

As you have the LFE as a mono signal you don't need to connect to both, although some people do so using a phono splitter. Many subs have one or other of the Left and Right also marked up as mono, or you may find that the sub handbook recommends one over the other.

Re: Total Newbie Question - how do I connect my Velodyne to my receiver???

One last question, looks like I need a cable with a male connector at one end (to plug in the Yamaha) and a bare wire on the other (to connect to either the left or right input on the back of the subwoofer).

I have a few AV leads with connectors on, do I just cut one end off and use that? They aren't particularly heavy gauge wire, just the sort of cable you could get in a Maplins or Dixons. Will that be sufficient?

Thanks

I have attempted to connect the subwoofer - but it ain't working. What am I doing wrong?

I bought an RCA cable and cut off one end. Not sure if I should use the middle wire, or the outer wire for left or right, but tried both.

The subwoofer just has a constant hum.

The other end is plugged into the back of the RX3900 in the sub woofer connector, not the one above the 3 orange connectors, but further along to the right in the same row (see attached).

You have the cable connected to the right terminal on the Yamaha but you cannot connect a low level RCA cable to high level speaker inputs, does your Velodyne have RCA inputs (low/line level) ?

Using a single RCA - RCA cable you simply connect from the Yamahas sub pre out (the one you are using now) to one of the the Velodynes low/line level RCA inputs

Can you post a pic of the back of the Velodyne or give the exact model number ?

Here is a picture of the back of the Velodyne.

I've plugged it into the right connector input and seems to be working (although very little bass at the moment, suspect I need to set up the AVR first).

The left channel is marked 'LFE in' but that didn't work!

Is this setup correct?

Thanks

Turn the low pass frequency dial all the way round to 120hz as your receiver with be handling the cut off frequency for bass and also turn the volume up on the back panel until you get the sub working at a reasonable level.

Normally it doesn't matter which input you select to connect the rca to (left or right).

ok, great.

Thanks for the advice!

What does the low pass frequency dial actually do?

It sets the frequency to which bass is handled by the sub. Normally you let the receiver handle it as what it does is makes allowances for your other speakers so you get good sound response across the entire frequency range.

So in effect although it might be set to 80hz in the receiver the receiver will actually send some bass signal before this so it blends well.

Looks good to me and yes you would need to set up the AVR so each speaker produces the same volume at your seating position

Glad you got it sorted
