MS309 help

Hi,

I've tried a few searches and cannot find a similar query for this model. If i'm wrong I apologise and any help would be most appreciated.

Basically I purchased an MS309 subwoofer to replace a KEF psw2000 that had broken twice, it sounded great and I was very happy with it, unfortunately I have been cursed again and now the MS309 has broken too, it now merely emits a low hum and does nothing else, any suggesttions as to a remedy would be much appreciated ?

Re: MS309 help

Hi I would suggest that it would need to go back for repair to MS which would most likely be through a dealer (UK Home Page Welcome to Mordaunt-Short) but not knowing how old or how much this is likely to be then you have to balance the cost of repair against a replacement.

I have not read much here on the 309 having that many problems like the psw2000, but maybe someone here has been in your position before and can tell you way forward

Re: MS309 help

That's a bit embarrassing as I just recommended that another member do exactly the same IIRC though I have only read of one other MS309 packing up, so I would contact MS and see if they will do a repair.

Re: MS309 help

Cheers for taking the time to reply guys.

I have contacted both my supplier and Morduant Short, unfortunatley Richer Sounds want £40 up front and then whatever it costs to fix it (it's 3 years old so it's out of warranty unless I can invoke one of these european laws I keep reading about these days!?).

Unfortunately morduant short where even less help as the response below shows :

"Thank you for your email. I am sorry to read of the problems you have been experiencing with your subwoofer.

As I am sure you can appreciate, without a first-hand inspection of the unit it is impossible to ascertain the exact nature of the difficulties you are experiencing or to offer any rectifying advice. It is rarely possible to fault diagnose by correspondence therefore I would suggest that you contact your retailer and request them to arrange for an engineer to examine your equipment.

I apologise for any inconvenience or dissatisfaction that this matter may have caused you, but trust that the above information is of assistance to you."

Looks like it could be time to replace it then, as I don't even know of any local (milton keynes) technicians that could have a look.

May have to bite the bullet and buy a Gemini mk2.

Re: MS309 help

or, if it fits, a new amp from BK The 309 is supposed to be hitting closer to an XLS200 on performance, if you are happy with the sub otherwise it's an option to consider.

Re: MS309 help

Thanks for that Dave, I was under the impression the B&K Gemini might be similar to a 309... and a £100 cheaper than the xl200, I trust that is not the case then ?

Re: MS309 help

309 or 309i? although not a huge difference between them. When you could pick up a new 309i for about the same as a Gemini then the advice was easy, as the 309i was closer to XLS200 territory, but now that they are rare, and about the same price new as an XLS200 then that's a harder call to make. As you can revamp a 309 for less than the cost of a Gemini I would be tempted. If you fancy a new sub then just buy the Gemini.
