Re: what low frequency sub below 10hz?

The SVS Ultra can be set to 10 hz tuning, so gives output below that, but even then it's reduced at that sort of frequency.

At that frequency and below the sound is felt rather than heard. So why not consider a good sub and a good transducer. These can reach 5Hz.

Chasing <20hz was a habit of mine a while back and a something of waste of time in retrospect. Very little material contains sub 10hz info at levels of any use (they are usually drowned out by higher frequencies even if you sub would deliver them). Probably less than .5% of the films I have ever watched contained sub 10hz material, of those the only ones I ever watch again are just for those scenes to test my EQing rather than being particularly good films.

Your money (IMHO) would be far better spent on a sub with a better top end which actually allows you to hear more of the low bass due to lower distortion levels.

Also consider some of the most impressive effects from subwoofers are not necessarily depth, rapid transients and high damping can create those phenomenal make-you-jump moments as well as give terrific musical timing that some 'deep' subs just can't deliver.

Another thing to factor in your budget is decent EQ, if you do find a sub that does what you want, your room may not play ball anyway

Just my opionion of course

If none of the aboveis a particular priority then the SVS Ultras would be the most obvious choice and they do offer a pretty good balance, I certainly don't think you will find much going deeper for the price.

Something you attach to your sofa that wiggles your bottom

Basically thay take a signal from your amp and transfer it to a tactile sensation that rumbles or vibrates your sofa, usually used in conjunction with a sub it adds to the bass sensation without having to spend loads on a super sub or play at high SPLs.

Re: what low frequency sub below 10hz?

Its worth noting that Nimby reported hearing or feeling nothing from his IB when playing an 8hz tone @ 124db (IIRC). 10 hz isnt going to be all that different, and aiming to get a box sub to produce this sort of performance might leave you with a huge sub and a feeling of 'whats all this fuss over 10hz'. My PB13U was doing 105db in room at 10hz, but besides bragging rights I dont think it's that big a deal. When I did that reference level test, I couldnt really feel much before I could hear the tone. I could certainly feel the sub in movies though, and I dont know of any that go as low as 10hz.

If what your trying to achieve is headroom so you have an accurate sub, then go for it

Re: what low frequency sub below 10hz?

Those very low frequencies, if reproduced with enough power can induce structural resonances in your house. Impressive, but perhaps not wise!
(but then again, we can't all be wise...)

IMHO they are used most effectively when used alongside a capable sub and not as substitute for a sub lacking oomph. Transducers add an extra level of impact that no sub can match. They add a frighteningly visceral impact in action moments that many bass nuts crave for. Transducers are designed to convert the low frequencies directly into vibrations in the structure of your seating; and importantly, nowhere else. They transmit these very low frequencies far more effectively than any sub and make big bass scenes much more realistic. Most action movies these days can contain low frequencies that a transducer can use. I am using an ultra PB13 as my sub and still highly value the fun transducers add to the explosions, earthquakes, gun shots, special effects etc. IMHO every high end home cinema should have one (or two)

For more info see these threads:

Butt shakers. Anyone got advice on these?

Earthquake Sound Q10B tactile sound unit and XJ600R amp

and there's a few more if you search here and else where.

Dan, You really should try a transducer then you will really feel 10hz strongly. If you could get a sub to do the same then your house would have been demolished around your ears with the vibrations; that's a slight exageration of course

I have just been playing Wall-E with my parents watching for the first time. When the rocket shipped blasted off with Wall-E on the outside my mum turned to me with a frightened look of OMG............and that's just Wall-E They haven't seen WOTW yet
