Did the bK xls200 live up to expectations

I wondered what happened to the BK Electronics XLS200 did it live up to everyones expectations, it all seemed to go a bit quiet!

I did expect people to be raving about them from the specifications, but I never felt from reading some of the threads that they were as good as people had hoped

Am I wrong on this?

Can you still buy them?

I got mine couldn't be happier with it especially at its price.

Had time to run it in now and watch a few films with it. Provides heaps of power for short thuds to long deep rumbles etc. Not really needed to have it over half of the low gain either so it has a lot left in reserve especially as it doesn't seem to boom or distort at high levels with DD tracks.

Also, becoming familiar with it, I say this and must say it looks to be exactly the same bar the bottom stand thing it sits on. The back panel is 100% identical to the BK bar the logos. 200w as well and apparently the Ruarks are made in the same town as BK Electronics. The Ruark sells for £850.

http://www.homecinemachoice.com/test...arkVita200.php

If you get the chance to get one then I would go for it with out worry - seems to have been a genuine bargain when you consider what else you could get for under 300 quid delivered - even 500.

Thanks munkay, i'm just trying to slot it into the rest of the subs in terms of performance rather than price, I have listened to a rel 150 and if it's as good as that then i'd be very impressed.

I have currently got a Kef 20b which I undestand is on a similar level to the MJ Acoustics pro 50

Just wondering if it's worth upgrading.

Heard an M & K K9 yesterday - truely impressive for the tiny size.

It's much better than the Q150E - I've heard both in the same room at home. A little better than the Q200E also, IMHO.

BK only make one-off subs for their "Bargain Corner". I doubt they'll ever make any more XLS-200s.

Does anyone have any further information about if there will be any more BK XLS200's

Did hear there may be some more when they have cleared the backlog - can anyone confirm or deny this

Didn't BK Electronics make the REL Q100 and REL Quake subs, too?

Yes to the Q100 but I understand that REL acquired their own manufacturing facility and designed and manufactured the Q150 onwards themselves.

AFAIK the XLS 200 is no more. Tom Pearce from BK Electronics did send an email to me stating that they will be offering a 300W version featuring an american groundzero drive unit. Can't say when or how much though.

Got a reply from Tom Pearce today. He states they will be making some more XLS 200's towards the end of the month. They are apparently keeping a list and will inform prospective purchasers when they are available.
The queue starts here!

The BK XLS 200 is basically:

http://www.bkelec.com/Diy/bsb200.htm

with

http://www.bkelec.com/Diy/xls10.htm

So for a few £ more you get it built in a cabinet that is as good as if not better than any other manu and at really low cost.

Not 100% sure but after some investigation this seems to be the case but does certainly seem to be.

I thought the Ruark sub link was interesting as well as the REL ones:

Ruark Sub (seems to be BK XLS200 in dif guise - it says 250w in the blurb box thing but its a mistake and is as article says a 200w drive unit)

http://www.homecinemachoice.com/test...arkVita200.php

The Ruark got great reviews and that was at 850 quid and apparently Ruark are made in same town as BK??

Even if not, order one without worrying about it, you can't really go wrong and you'll get a decent personal service anyway which you won't from a big producer.

Can someone who has heard the XLS200 give some idea as to the characteristics of the Bass

Is it smooth, deep, tuneful etc

Will it be good for music as well as AV.

Want something that will integrate seemlessly unlike the Rel150 that I kept noticing when I demoed it.

There was this review in case you missed it :

BK XLS 200 Subwoofer Review (Long Post)

I have used mine a lot since getting it on the 23rd Dec 2003.

Have it hooked up via low phono.

For films I couldn't be happier, can easily cope with short sharp explosions to prolonged rumbles and the like. Only used it with gain around 50% and it provides plenty of kick in room 24x18 with 13ft ceilings.

Music - I find it compliments my speakers perfectly now I have fiddled about with settings and am accustomed to it. IT has filled out the sound perfectly and cds i used to think were a bit trebly are now far more enjoyable to listen to.
With music it definitely adds more power and depth if you get me and sounds as good with heavy rock or quiet acoustic tracks.

I would say it is probably at its best for Cinema as it integrates so well (with my setup at least)

When you have it setup correctly you wont notice it being there - mine doesn;t boom at all even at around 60% gain - as I said, It genuinely has filled out the whole sound without being the slightest bit obtrusive.

I think if you are in doubt whether to get one or not then look at what else you would get for the price up to £500 and I think you'll find it hard to find anything better.

BTW if you can't wait for an XLS200, witters is selling his REL Q200E for the very reasonable price of £330 in the classifieds forum.

Try Mark Grant's sub cable available in the Powerbuy forum. The Beekeeper who is our resident technical expert called them the Rolls Royce of cables at beer money prices.

How were you able to order one? - The site says don't order because they won't have any more until end of Jan, which is obviously now mid Feb.

I had to phone my order through Telephone 4 Bkelec, I'm actually first in the list to get a hold of one of these so expect a longer wait (maybe) if you are thinking about gettin one.

The reason the date has been extended is cause peerless (Sub speaker manufacture) are'nt shipping until the begining of Feb.

@MuFu, all the feedback on this forum seem to imply that this is a superior unit to the REL Q200, I realise it is gonna be cheaper if I buy the second hand one but I am looking for the added warranty just incase I need to fall back on it, cheerz for the heads up thou

Yeah it is. I know some people are impatient though (or won't be able to get an XLS200) and a Q200E for ~£300 is a pretty good deal.

I was looking at the BK sub for a mate, and something struck me regarding the Peerless driver: The bass volume seems to drop off quite quickly after 50Hz (see pic below, which I have tried to clarify, from the BK Electronics site). I also noticed that the Sonus Faber Gravis (a £1000 sub) that I had also used the same Peerless driver that BK uses in the XLS200 and their crossover only went up to 65Hz.
If anyone has one of these XLS200 subs, can they confirm that adequate bass is present even if an 80Hz x-over is selected?

That graph was taken outdoors at 1m, with the x-over in the 12 o'clock position (80Hz). For starters it's +/-3dB between 15 and 80Hz - not bad at all. If you consider that the crossover is probably designed to result in a -12dB/octave slope with -3dB@80Hz, the roll-off shown is largely precedented.
