Squeezebox and white noise?
There is a somewhat concerning thread on the Slim Devices forums about the above issue. While it doesn't seem widespread it also doesn't seem to be as rare as one might like. Having just ordered an SB3 (an order which i could change to a Sonos), I wondered whether any users have experienced this problem? It certainly sounds like it could do speakers some damage, possibly hearing too. Little off putting for me I must admit

Re: Squeezebox and white noise?
Can you give any more info?
I've had my squeezebox for a whole week and absolutely loving it! In fact thinking of a second for the bedroom....

Re: Squeezebox and white noise?
The only time you should get hash noise is if you try to feed the squeezebox DTS (or any multichannel soundtrack) and don't use the digital output and a suitable decoder. Even if you do use a decoder, you may still get hash noise if you try to use the squeezebox volume control.
With regular two channel PCM sources, mp3, wma, flac, wav etc. you should never get any hash noise.
Just found the thread you are referring to. Looks like its SB3 specific - possibly they'll solve it with a firmware update. I've never had an issue with my SB2.

Re: Squeezebox and white noise?
Don't worry about, never known anyone with that problem. Manufactures sites always have 'scary' threads, most people only post when they have problems. Unlike AVfurms, where people come for general chat good and bad. I can tell you for a fact that the current Squeezebox has less bugs than the current iPod.

Re: Squeezebox and white noise?
I've never experienced this in my 10mths as an SB3 user.

Re: Squeezebox and white noise?
Hi,
I have just returned my SB3 because of this. I had it set up in the bedroom using analogue connections to a Yamaha amplifier and playing FLAC files. It suddenly played absurdly loud and distorted. I switched it all off as I thought it was either the amplifier or speakers at fault.I tried using the headphones socket on the SB3 to powered speakers but it was the same. I connected my CD player to the amp over the same connections and everything was OK. The SB3 has been returned for repair / replacement but I must admit it has me worried. I had planned to have them all around the house and and I have an SB+ on order for the living room, but now I'm not sure. Luckily it didn't damage any of the other equipment but who can say I'll be as lucky next time.
Ron
