IPod in my bathroom
Hi everyone this is my 1st porst
I want to set up a system with my ipod to play music in my bathroom. I want the ipod to be out of the bathroom and in a place where its out of reach of the kids. I dont need to change the songs when im in the bath. I want the speakers to be integtrated into the bathroom and obviously waterproof. I will be putting a new bathroom in in the next few weeks. Has anyone done anything like this or has any good ideas.
I dont want to spend much more than about £250-300
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: IPod in my bathroom
Not done anything like this myself, but some comments.
Speakers - rather than water proof, why not go for ceiling mounted ones. Inset into the ceiling void space.
I don't know what other equipment you have, but if you get a dock and connect it to an amplifier with A and B speaker sets (or even multizone), you could have the iPod connected to the dock and amp, and have the second set of speakers in the bathroom.
I'd have thought the budget would cover a dock and speakers - but not a new amp if you need one.
Obviously the location of your bathroom and where you would have the amp are critical.

Re: IPod in my bathroom
It does not matter where the speakers are placed, they will have be proper water proof speakers which are made for the job because of the steam and condensation.
Have a search on the Slim Devices forums at www.slimdevices.com. A guy on there built a squeezebox, amp and speaker setup into his bathroom using some special bathroom speakers. Obviously the best solution is a dedicated player like the Squeezebox 3 wather proofed and set into the wall, but even if you just look at how the guy on there did it you could get a good idea how to do it with an ipod dock.
Otherwise, look for some small outdoor speakers that are made to cope with the weather. But building a full setup into a bath room is no easy task, especially when you consider the amp etc too. Thinking about it, some active (powered) speakers into the bath room would be better than trying to figure out what to do with an amp.
You will probably have to track down a specialist company though, but they are around. I have seen a guy in a magazine with a 5.1 surround setup around his bath and a special water proof flat screen made for bathrooms. I'm not sure how anyone could say in the bath long enough to watch a full length movie!
If you do it, please show us how you get on

Re: IPod in my bathroom
You could just get a cheap midi hifi in the bedroom and use the line or aux in connection for your ipod or even a ipod ready mini and run outdoor speakers to your bathroom.

Re: IPod in my bathroom
Or for a really cheap option you could attach the ipod to an FM transmitter and then pick up that frequency using a normal FM portable radio in the bathroom. Obviously the sound would only be as good as the speaker in the radio though !
There are companies who specialise in outdoor and marine speakers which might be cheaper for the bathroom.

Re: IPod in my bathroom
Hi CCFC 1927, I put in a new bathroom/bedroom in our house last year fed with i pod, sky HD and DVD to both rooms & it`s bloody brilliant !! (even if i do say so myself !!).
As previously said it`s pretty simple... (Concentrating on bathroom audio) I used B&W ceiling speakers (perfectly fine for waterproofing) wired to an old spare amp I had, fed with a Marantz i pod dock.
The sound absolutely amazes me even 1 year on & is actually better than in the bedroom as the room is smaller. Everyone that`s heard it thinks it`s brilliant & I can even change tracks from the bath as i`ve got a RF remote.
Cost (bathroom) : speakers 200, dock 100, speaker wire 30, amp ?.
Really recommend it & putting in a small flatscreen even better (300 + 50 for wall bracket) is away from bath & is RCD protected so fine.
All electronics are hidden in wardrobe so you can`t see anything & is way out of my son`s reach, so great.
Nothing better than having a long soak watching the TV or relaxing to music.

Majorly illegal to do that! YOu can get proper bathroom TV's for £1500, TO run an AMP to speakers in a bathroom much easier to keep everything in another room, bedroom or airing cupboard and use a cheap AMP to some ceiling speakers normal speakers will croak quicker than bathroom speaker but cheap bathroom speakers sound naff........ a deent single stereo speaker and small AMP with IPod dock (or just an AV cable) is what you need http://www.richersounds.com/showprod...C-CR230-SILVER is ideal

I was assured by the qualified electrician who installed it that as long as it was 2m away from any water source mounted with 9 anchor bolts & fully RCD protected & isolated that it was safe and legal. Before this I had a similar DIY set up for 15 years without a sniff of a problem, anyway if I fry I won`t get bored with anymore TV repeats.
As to the rest of your quote I can only repeat the B&W ceiling speakers are awesome and are far better than a single stereo speaker & at times give my very expensive downstairs system a run for it`s money in my bathroom! For 200 quid they are superb & would strongly recommend them.

Re: IPod in my bathroom
If you can fit 2 inceilings in then its a better idea as always but tiled bathrooms are hardly ideal accoustic locations. As for the LEgality Pre PArt P possible but the use of any none IP rated equipment in a "special location" is frowned upon I'm not saying your install isnt safe as i havent seen it, (must be a fairly large bathroom to be 2m from any water source and the steam/humidity wont do the screen any good) but its not reconmended.

Re: IPod in my bathroom
Horny
Areas within bathroom are classified into zones , depending on the zone dictates the IP rating that is required for the equipment.
Ie shaver sockets arent ip rated but are allowed in bathrooms so long as they arent in zone 0 and at least 600mm from the taps in the basin
As for the bathroom i used a Stereo with a auxilaary input mounted in the spare room and matched it with car speakers mounted in the ceiling and sprayed with white paint looked great and sounded very good for £100
