House-Wide Audio using iTunes

Hi All

I am hopefully moving into a new house soon and want to setup house-wide music using my MacMini, which is running the latest version of iTunes.

I don't need control of the music from every room (apart from sound) and I don't want to have to run wires to/from every room. I know about Apple's Airtune's system, but are there any other options available to me?

I thought of using USB Homeplugs (not the ethernet versions) and powered USB speakers, but apparently this will not work.

My current home computer setup includes a 1.25ghz MacMini with an external wireless adsl modem/router and a pre-installed bluetooth module. I also use FrontRow and a wireless RF remote to control iTunes, Movies, DVDs and Slideshows. I also have two ethernet homeplugs so that I can connect my two Macs using the mains.

The house (if successful) is an old property with some pretty thick stone walls...this maybe a consideration.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Regards
Alfamale

Have a look at the Slimdevices Squeezebox 3

http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_overview.html?

It's the best audio product at that price IMHO, and even though you may not want control in each room now, you will eventually.

Otherwise something like the Soneeter Bard USB;

Thanks lazymatt.

The Squeezebox 3 looks ideal and cheap at around £160 per unit.

Hi Autopilot

I see you have the Squeezebox 3. Do you use it wired the wired or wireless functionality and if wireless, how good is it?

Cheers

Re: House-Wide Audio using iTunes

I've had an e-mail today from Sonos to say they are now selling the BU130 pack for £699, it includes one ZP80, one ZP100 and one controller.

It really is fantastic value:

Wireless and it's perfect. Never had a glitch in over a year of constant use. Don't forget, wireless does not effect sound quality. The signal could drop if it a long way from the router/access point, but it has a very good buffer and i never have a any issues.
