Digital Media Player - interface from NAS?

Is anyone using a NAS playback device where they could recommend the UI? I've seen (and used) the Kaleidescape, and if I had a spare £10k I'd totally invest (incidentally, probably just for the music side - not really into movies).

Basically, I'm looking for something that can play back my music (which is currently stored in iTunes in MP3 format) - everyone who's about to say Apple TV put your hands down - and also playback DivX files of the TV shows I download when I miss them on Freeview.

Those of you who are still going to say Apple TV hacked for DixV playback - any links?

Anyone else got anything they'd suggest? x264 playback is not important. I've seen the PM MB100/200 and while they're great bits of kit, the UI would never pass muster with anyone but the guy who wrote Norton/Midnight Commander.

Thoughts appreciated.

PS Don't need (but wouldn't complain) a DVD player in this device; similarly, would prefer not to have an HDD in it as I will be storing all media on 2TB RAID array on my media server.

Re: Digital Media Player - interface from NAS?

If you want to know what people around here use (for audio) - Audio streaming devices

Basically look at the Squeezebox 3, Sono's or (if you want something really top end) the Transporter.

There are cheaper options though, but if you have the money the about three are by far the best.

Whats you max budget and what other AV are you planning to use it with?

Re: Digital Media Player - interface from NAS?

I was looking for something with an on screen display - I'm aware of the Squeezebox/Transporter, and the Sonos, while a very nifty gadget, doesn't integrate the UI/control with any other equipment.

Is anyone using anything with an on screen (preferably HD) UI?

Something like the Helios, or a 360? You'd have to have the PC on to run he 360, but not sure about the Helios.

Re: Digital Media Player - interface from NAS?

I'd spotted that in one of the digital video threads and had forgotten about it. Looks perfect - just need to check what the UI looks like.

My PC is on pretty much 24/7.

If it's for audio only, do you really want to have to use the TV all the time when changing tracks etc?
