Installing products on a QNAP TS-101 NAS

This may seem like a silly question to be asking but I am a bit confused about what versions of products can be installed on the QNAP TS-101. Having no experience with NAS units in general I am not clear on the compatibiliy of the OS on this unit. For example, when I queried the people from whom I purchased the unit about installing SlimServer I was directed not to the SlimServer site but to another download site. As I understand it this unit can operate as an iTunes Server but I am not sure where I should obtain the iTunes software. I would appreciate any help from someone who has experience with this particular NAS.

Re: Installing products on a QNAP TS-101 NAS

I have installed slimserver on a TS-201 which is pretty much the same thing, was very easy to do, took about an hour in total

I would be careful if installing two different server programs as they may interfere with each other.

There is twonkyvision and multimedia server installed by default, one of those might work

mt-daapd might also work on there as it seems to be running a flavour of debian

Re: Installing products on a QNAP TS-101 NAS

Did you install from a download from the Slim Devices sit or from a download from a site at Progressive? Also, are you using iTunes and, if so, do you have the iTunes on your computer pointed at the NAS QMedia folder in order to rip CDs directly to the NAS?

The progressiveav one, the one on slimdevices website won't work on a QNAP

I set it up for a client, don't use one myself, but I setup CDex to rip straight to the QNAP and it seemed to work fine

I also put together a simple script to shut it down without accessing the web interface on it

Re: Installing products on a QNAP TS-101 NAS

Thanks for all your help. I now have the QNAP up and running. Just need to install SlimServer, point iTunes on my computer to a folder on the QNAP, and make a decision as to what MP3 bitrate to use. I have 80 albums on my computer but they need to be re-riped at 192 or higher so direct to the QNAP would be the best way to do it.
