Squeezebox 3 - PC on?

Hi
I've read lots on the SB3 and it sounds awesome. Just about to buy one but wanted to clarify one point as most reviews have been a bit ambiguous - can you listen to your music collection when the PC is turned off? It seems to suggest so...or is it just the Internet radio?
Tks

Re: Squeezebox 3 - PC on?

Could you elaborate on the 'networked' bit of your comment? Sorry to be technically obtuse!

Re: Squeezebox 3 - PC on?

The SB3 runs using Slimserver software, so you either need the PC on, or a NAS (Network Attached Storage Drive) which has Slimserver running.

You can either buy a Qnap Drive, with the software pre-installed, or something like a Buffalo NAS, onto which you can install Slimserver yourself.

The NAS plugs into your router, you load up the NAS with your tunes, and import them into the Slimserver software, and off you go.

You can download the Slimserver software for free as well as a software based SB3 so you can have a play around and see if you like them before you buy:

Have a look here about networking as well:

So my Netgear SC101 (networked HDD) attached to my router will fit the bill for this? The Squeezebox can read the mp3's straight off the HDD without the PC being on?

'fraid the Netgear's not a true NAS, so no.
