Has anybody used a Cocktail X10 as a server to a Sonos Connect? Does it work OK, are there any issues with this?

It might be worth asking on the Sonos forums. They have lists there of hardware compatibility too.

Sonos usually works by you pointing it to a share on a hard drive on your network and it then picks up the music from there. It can also read iTunes playlists but I'm not sure what this X10 music system is.

Your X10 would need to allow access to the music folder as a standard network share (using the CIF/SMB protocol), in which case you are accessing it like you would a NAS drive over the network. If it supports this then you need to set up your music library on Sonos to connect to the X10 music folder over the network using the //share name/folder format.

On a normal NAS drive that is on the supported list it's very stable. Sometimes there's a problem with other wireless networks interfering or a duplicate IP address but it should be easy to sort out with the help of Sonos support and the Sonos diagnostics.

I've never seen mention of the device you are thinking of using though.

How reliable is the unit generally? Using it for Sonos (assuming it supports file sharing) is not likely to make much difference to its overall reliability as the data rates are quite low for music streaming. Stick to having it wired to the network (or direct to a Sonos device) as relying on wifi would be the weakest link, and connection of the music library over wifi (as opposed to via Sonosnet wireless) is not officially supported by Sonos.

X10 manual says, "13-3. X10 works as a great Music Server for Sonos’ product. " You need to enable the Samba server function on the X10 to make the music library visible to Sonos.
