Just installed the latest firmware. What a palaver! I got that "error, needs a service",message. Then I tried the recovery thing. Two hours later I was still getting the chequered screen. Used various USB sticks, and even downloaded the firmware from the .com site.In the end the frimware loaded! Totally bollocksed up my settings. Is that normal? Also it took a while to get all my 1300 albums listed and I noticed in my Girlschool (the rock band!) folder I had a Metallica album,"Garage Days"...Checked the tage edit etc.All correct, band name,Metallica, album name,"Garage Days".Checked my Metallica folder and it was there as well.So I deleted it from the Girlschool folder, and hey presto! it vanished from the metallica folder as well. Thatcher's Britain.

Just download the Firmware from cocktailaudio.co.uk as the release notes (1656) are in English (this time) not in 'korean English' and the details are explained as to why we ought to update manually not via network and to download the file properly

New Firmware 14.5.12

I have successfully stopped the auto firmware but cannot get the update on manually as the X10 will not recognise my USB. What do I do now?

Come on, just format the USB stick to NTFS, perhaps you have an old FAT/32 type. I think that will do the trick.

Go here
http://cocktailaudio.co.uk/firmware/firmwareER.pdf

and try the emergency firmware recovery which seems to work for any version not just the stated one if that fails can your X1O see other USB devices ?

If the X10 can't see the USB why do a ER recovery , waste of time.
Just change the partition on the memory stick & plug it back into the X10 - simple. ER recovery is for when the X10 software gets stuck on chequers due to incomplete firmware download or wrong packet during download.

Whilst bowing to your obviously superior knowledge
I would add

1 That the Emergency Recovery whilst published for the white screen problem is valid when other methods of firmware update fail or indeed as an alternative method

2 What presented as the same symptom on my X10 as in not recognizing Usb drive was resolved perfectly by use of the recovery procedure. the Usb being found by that procedure whilst not showing under the menu

Not a waste of time in my case

, the stick isn't recognised, change the partition & X10 will pickup the USB memory stick. The user can then update the X10 to the new firmware without any fuss (Setup/firmware/update by manual......DONE)
ER recovery still requires a memory stick...............

I have formatted to NTFS but what do you mean by "change the partition"?

Meant change the partition from FAT to NTFS file system which you have done ( if it was FAT to start with ) by formatting to NTFS now try it and see

I have done that but it doesn't seem to see anything on the USB stick. It shows HDD and USB but when I select teh USB, there is no update file there and so it does not update.

May seem silly question but have you saved the image file to the Usb after format and can you see it on the Usb via PC ?

Yes, I can see the file on the stick but when I put it into the back of the X10, it shows nothing on the USB stick - I am presuming it should come up with teh R1656 package file

Yes it should show the image file name

Have you used that Usb stick with no problems on X10 previously as X10 can be fussy with some sticks

Try the emergency update method I offered from here it probably wont work but can do no harm

You could try connecting the X10 in mass store usb mode via the dedicated pc usb socket on X10

Copy the image to hdd1 and update from hdd1

Recording from vinyl

I am thinking of getting one of these, mostly to transfer my vinyl collection to a more accessible form. I bought a Teac minidisk system a while ago (yes, I know...) to do the same thing but found that you couldn't locate individual tracks unless you recorded each one separately and this required more space on the disk. Would I have to do the same with the CA-X10?
As an aside - the Teac mini-disk, CD player and DAB radio all have optical out but the accompanying amp (Reference 300 series) doesn't have optical in! Is it worth getting a new amp with optical input or is the built-in amp in the CA-X10 good enough to power a pair of ancient Tannoy Eatons? How much better is optical over RCA or 3.5 jacks?

I think the X10,s built in aux recorder will record vinyls as one track best to rec on pc with 1 of the many progs to do that then name all tracks as appropriate and add tags

Once added to X10 search can be on title album artist or genre

As to optical output never tried it Im happy with the speaker out 30 W per channel into 8 Ohms

Opinions from many users seems to be the audio is much better via optics and ex amp quality costs money

What are you doing????
Just download the file from the UK site (properly & forget about the ER stuff) & copy the stuff onto the USB (firmware is already unzipped & in pkg extension).
Go to setup/firmware/update by manual - locate the file & the X10 will do the rest. You don't have to check the USB content via the browser section.
The X10 will not recognise the file from the "BROWSER ICON", you have to go to the firmware section via setup.
(Seems like your USB was ok from the beginning...........)

Correct all files no matter what they are called will show from firmware update manual menu I have all versions still under the download names and just select the required version

Music files will not show on the firmware section (setup/firmware/update by manual)........it is meant to only show the firmware file not music (directories can be seen but not the content).
It is quite akin to the other sections too....good idea by Novatron

you're quite correct it only needs renaming if you are doing the recover.

Just a word of experience, make sure the full file is downloaded. I have spent the past three days trying to update the firmware with a 63KB file instead of a 148,597KB file!! Now i have the complete file it updated straight away, when you don't have the complete file it will just reboot and reboot..............

Just thought i would share, i felt like a right idiot when i realized!!!

No sound on speakers

Just received my X10 today and copied some music files from my PC to the DB but there is no sound from the speakers (tried two sets) though the headphones are fine. Volume is mid-range (66), mute is off, Audio setting is 'On (Subwoofer)'.
Any ideas?

Try SPDIF off in audio menu
