Alternatives to the Squeezebox?

I've been looking into getting some kind of a radio or music player for the bedroom and I like the idea of something that will stream music both from the internet and from my own collection of MP3 files stored on the Playstation ...

... and I've found the Logitech squeezebox:
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/wireless_mu sic_systems/&cl=gb,en

Anyone got one of these? Do they work as well as the marketing blurb suggests?

Are there any other, better options?

Cheers

"Anyone got one of these? Do they work as well as the marketing blurb suggests?"

I have 3 classics and a Boom, yes they do work pretty well, I 've been using mine for about 4 years and love them, they have revolutionised the way I listen to music. I'm very content with the products as they represent reasonable value for money, are open source so can be customised to work with a variety of third party controllers and have a great group of volunteers who are constantly writing new 'plug-ins' for them.

"Are there any other, better options?"

Better in what way? easier to set up and manage , look into Sonos.
Better sound? There are a number of options in the Sonos and Squeezebox range that include aftermarket mods.
After that, the sky is the limit with some very high end and high price tag systems dependant on your budget and functional requirements.

Re: Alternatives to the Squeezebox?

Thanks for the reply.

I guess I'm just looking for alternatives as a whole. I've only recently started looking into a wireless music system for the bedroom and the Squeezebox is really the product I've found. It would be nice to find some other companies that do the same if only to compare products.

As a slight side note, if I ended up going for the Touch or the Duet I'm assuming that I'd need speakers in each room. Is that correct?

Thanks,

Yes, the Transporter, Duet, Touch, classic (SB3) all need active (powered) speakers or to be plugged into an amp/hifi set up. You can either run the speakers through a distribution amp /switch arrangement, or use individual stereos in each room.
Boom and Radio models have speakers built in.

I use a boom in my bedroom (and very occasional outside patio duty), classic in the kitchen is hooked up to Aego M active speakers, living room is hooked up to my surround sound amp, and the conservatory has an old but faithful amp and speakers.

Sonos and Squeezebox have a fairly loyal user base here, but other systems do exist, some time on Google and this forum should help you narrow down the choices. I would definitely solicit opinions here before you commit to a purchase.

Factors to consider..
Budget vs sound quality.
Integration with third paty services such as Napster, LastFM, etc. It may not seem important just now but once you have sampled seemongly limitless archives and automatic music suggestions based on your listening history, you will be hooked.
Ease of use /installation, and wiring vs wireless requirements.
Controller options.
Expandability, as once you have one streamer, you are going to want more.

LOL, never a truer word said !! I got a boom so I could carry it into whatever room I am in, but that's getting old school now, I'm looking at the touch for my Home Cinema Amp when it is readily available

Re: Alternatives to the Squeezebox?

There is probably nothing that can touch squeezebox at this price range.
I had a wifi Radio from Pure that was more expensive than the Boom but it was amateurish in comparison.
