| Re: Alternatives to the Squeezebox?
"As a slight side note, if I ended up going for the Touch or the Duet I'm assuming that I'd need speakers in each room. Is that correct?"
Yes, the Transporter, Duet, Touch, classic (SB3) all need active (powered) speakers or to be plugged into an amp/hifi set up. You can either run the speakers through a distribution amp /switch arrangement, or use individual stereos in each room.
Boom and Radio models have speakers built in.
I use a boom in my bedroom (and very occasional outside patio duty), classic in the kitchen is hooked up to Aego M active speakers, living room is hooked up to my surround sound amp, and the conservatory has an old but faithful amp and speakers.
Sonos and Squeezebox have a fairly loyal user base here, but other systems do exist, some time on Google and this forum should help you narrow down the choices. I would definitely solicit opinions here before you commit to a purchase.
Factors to consider..
Budget vs sound quality.
Integration with third paty services such as Napster, LastFM, etc. It may not seem important just now but once you have sampled seemongly limitless archives and automatic music suggestions based on your listening history, you will be hooked.
Ease of use /installation, and wiring vs wireless requirements.
Controller options.
Expandability, as once you have one streamer, you are going to want more.
