Squeezebox radio too loud

Hi,

I have the squeezebox radio and two squeezebox receivers. With the amps attached to the receivers I have the volume up quite high, so that when I walk from room to room the volume level is similar. However the squeezebox radio volume is just one setting (i.e. the one you use for syncing) so it is much louder than the other amps at the same synced volume level. Is there a way to turn down the internal squeezebox radio volume so that all the systems have the same volume?? With one of my amps the volume is high enough as it is such that I don't really want to turn it up anymore because when I switch sources it may well just blow the speakers...

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Re: Squeezebox radio too loud

I am only guessing but if you turn down the volume knob on the radio are you saying that the volume in the other two will also decrease because they are synchronized? Have you tried synchronizing the Radio and player A to B instead of A&B to the Radio?

Re: Squeezebox radio too loud

Yes but I'd like the radio in the kitchen volume synced also becauase late at night when I play music in the bedroom I don't want it loud in the kitchen where the squeezebox radio is and I don't want to have to remember to keep turning the kitchen off (I probably wouldn't hear it in the bedroom anyway, but my neighbours might!)

Re: Squeezebox radio too loud

No, this is one of the weak points of the Squeezebox System, you can either sync the absolute level of the volume or not sync the volume at all, which kind of makes this feature useless.

I could be nitpicking and say that there are tools for the SB that do this better but I think I must not do this here.

But seriously, why can't you just adapt your amps volume to the radios. Actually I'm a bit confused to hear that the volume of the Radio is too HIGH vs. too LOW.
To minimize quantization losses I would always try to move the digital volume on the SB up as high as possible and turn down the amp's volume. So can't you find a volume setting for your amp that makes syncing the two reasonable?

EDIT: Now reading your post again I see that this is probably what you are doing and that this is the issue.... Note to self: Read first, write later...

Re: Squeezebox radio too loud

Hi Coolio,

Yeah the issue is I already have the amp volumes up too high! Perhaps there is a gain I could use on the squeezebox software for the bedroom and living room receievers. But if thats possible I fear that would degrade sound quality... I'd rather set a negative gain on the radio as I'm not that bothered about the quality for that.

Cheers,

Chris

Re: Squeezebox radio too loud

I'm trying to join to do that. Its quite a basic thing they missed I think. Not all amps are the same. I'll see if I can increase the volume on one of my amps specifically for the squeezebox input only. Not sure if thats possible though and it also means switching from another source e.g. ps3 I could accidently play music too loud blowing the speakers.

I've also noticed the syncing between the radio and squeezebox receiver isn't working!!! This kind of stuff should really work out of the box. Using 7.4.1 squeezeserver as well!

Re: Squeezebox radio too loud

I may be missing the point (and it may not apply to the Receivers), but I've got a Boom and an SB3, and I have disabled the volume control altogether on my SB3, so that regardless of what volume it's "officially" on, the level is the same, and my amp does all the volume adjustments for that, meaning that when the two are synced, and I adjust the volume, only the Boom changes.

As I said, I may be missing the point.

I think he has the "sync volume" option enabled and wants both devices to synchronously change volume so if he turns down one the other will go down, too.
Just like with the Sonos.
Now with SB you can only adjust the absolute volume level and on the Radio you have no other preamp to change gain in between. So if you can't find a setting where "50%" and "25%" is likely acceptable on both devices, you are in trouble.
I see the same, that's why Sonos and iPeng have that feature to have a "Master" volume that changes the volume on all devices but you can still make relative adjustments for single players.

Coolio, you hit the nail on the head. That is exactly what I'm looking for (Plus music syncing properly!)
