Mediamonkey and external DAC - how do I get it to work?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I am struggling with Mediamonkey.

I have recently got a USB DAC which is hooked up to my Compaq nx7010 laptop and was all recognised correctly. After disabling the Soundmax card in the laptop I can listen to MP3's from Windows Media Player through the USB DAC on my stereo

Trouble is I want to see how the DAC copes with FLAC files but for some reason I can't get Mediamonkey (latest non gold version) to output to the DAC - I am just greeted with a wall of silence even though the song is playing on Mediamonkey

Does anyone know what settings I have to change in Mediamonkey to get this to work

It's a while since I looked at this, but have you checked MM has an ASIO interface/plugin?

Don't use MM but as an alternative, there's a FLAC codec for WMP here.

It's not just the codecs required, there needs to be a direct path from the FLAC file to the DAC. The Windows sound system 'does things' to the sound and an ASIO plugin bypasses that.

If MM thinks it's playing the files, then I bet it is decoding them into sound.

Re: Mediamonkey and external DAC - how do I get it to work?

Thanks for replying folks (it was getting a bit lonely out here ).

I do have the FLAC plug-ins but where would I look for an ASIO Plug in?

Under Options - output plugins I have :
DirectSOund V2.2.7
MediamonkeyDirectSOund
Waveout Output

and I have it set to Mediamonkey DirectSound

Under DSP Plugins there is one call DeFX V0.97 but it is not selected

I'm just really confused as Winamp plays the FLAC files okay (I downloaded this the other night) but I really like Mediamonkey as it allows ripping as well from one package.

What do I do folks?

Re: Mediamonkey and external DAC - how do I get it to work?

MM wiki kind of hints that the WinAmp ASIO plugin works.

When I used ASIO it was using optical from my soundcard to my Bersford DAC. If you're using a USB connection, maybe you don't need ASIO, and just need to specify the DAC as a 'sound card'?

Re: Mediamonkey and external DAC - how do I get it to work?

I'd have to read the instructions on the page linked above, but roughly:

Install the ASIO4All application from it's website.

Download the ASIO plugin from the Japanese site and copy to your MM plugin folder (then reboot MM).

Download WinAmp plugin and again copy to MMs plugin folder (I don't know why...)

tell MM to use the ASIO plugin, which can be configured in the plug in pages.

Good luck.
