Smile Upgrading Sonos... Cullen mod vs Audiocom???

I am planning to modify the Sonos either thru the Cullen
upgrade or the audiocom one (.: Audiocom International :. Modifications : Sonos ZP90).
Does anyone know what is the difference between them?
Which one will give the best results in my setup? Thanks!

Re: Upgrading Sonos... Cullen mod vs Audicom???

Vinze,

I have just dropped off my Squeezebox to be modded (Digital Level 2 + DCT) with Audiocomm.

I do know that there is some decent feedback on the Sonos upgrade from Audiocomm. Best thing to do is to contact both of the companies and talk through what you are trying to achieve and see what fits best.

One advantage of Audiocomm is that it is a UK operation so shipping shouldn't be so much (plus supporting UK industry!). However, what you need to find out is the best mod for your £ and situation.

Contact Mark at Audiocomm and have a chat!

Good luck,

Anthony

Re: Upgrading Sonos... Cullen mod vs Audicom???

Anthony, thanks and let me know your impressions when you get yours back.

I did talk to Mark and it seems the 2 approach are quite different. Audiocom focuses on inprovements to the switch mode power supply and noise reduction overall whilst Cullen "replaces the mediocre Cirrius Logic CODAC and the associated high jitter clocks" (from their website). Both claim significant improvement to the sound quality when using it with an external DAC which is what I do. I was wondering if anyone out there had actually heard any of these 2 (compared to the normal zp90) and could share his experience...

Will do Vinze,

I have an upgraded power supply coming as well from another supplier (Paul Hynes) which may also be an option for the Sonos system as well.

I will be intially using the DAC on my Arcam receiver but will ultimately go external DAC route when funds (and space on the Rack!) allow.

Re: Upgrading Sonos... Cullen mod vs Audicom???

Anthony -

The DAC on the cambridge 840C works a treat with the Sonos (I found it digs more detail than the Cyrus DAC X which costs more than twice) and you get a good CD spinner as well. To my knowledge it's the only CD/DAC below 1000 pounds that does 24bit/384Khz upsampling... Richer Sounds has a good promo on it, and you get a full refund if you dont like it and bring it back within 14 days.

If interested, you will find plenty of reviews here:
Azur 840C up-sampling CD player / 840 Stereo / Reviews / Cambridge Audio

Curious to know how the upgraded power supply works for you. I tried the Tacima and the results were appaling (the sound lost weight, voices changed).

Re: Upgrading Sonos... Cullen mod vs Audicom???

Hi Vinze,

I have an Arcam DV139 which whilst not an upsampler I would hope has a good DAC. I also have an AVr300 whose DAC is also good.

Would be looking for something slightly exotic I reckon, Chord, Beresford, PS Audio, Naim etc.

Yep, will let you know re power supply!
